One Nation, Under God

Now I am a lightweight

Before I moved here I had no idea that people had Thanksgiving parties before the week of Thanksgiving. I used to take pride in eating anyone under the table but when Susan, PJ and I went to my in-law’s Thanksgiving party I noticed I no longer hold the crown.

I got through my first plate with a full head of steam, like old times … then the unexpected happened. My stomach signaled to my brain that I was full!

In years past, I could make it through two or three plates of food and still have room for cherry cheesecake and/or peach cobbler. This year I didn’t even finish my slice of Pumpkin-Chocolate Cheesecake.

Don’t get me wrong, the food was wonderful. It was the first year that I had a chance to try true sweet potatoes instead of yams. The stuffing, turkey and ham were all on point but I couldn’t eat myself into my yearly food coma.

If only I had this issue every Thanksgiving of my life, I believe that I would be at least 20 pounds lighter.

Many don’t know this but I was born a couple of months premature and only weighed a little over three pounds. I was considered a runt until about third grade, when I finally “found” my appetite. So my logic tells me that my holiday overeating and general gluttony was just to catch up.

While my pride is a little hurt, it is also a relief that I have slowed down as far as food consumption goes. I have noticed that my metabolism has slowed down. I have also noticed that my drive to work out has also died which has also resulted in me getting more sleep.

I do hope that my drive to work out comes back but not my old appetite because one of my biggest fears was having a heart attack because of my super consumption of food during the holidays.

I do aim to eat my weight in turkey this holiday season and hopefully vegetables to make mom proud.

So far it seems like PJ has been extremely receptive of the holiday season and the scary thing is he’s only two, yet he can be heard singing Deck the Halls, though his version goes, 'deck the halls, with Christmas presents'. . . yikes.
