Earthquake, Music, Highway and baby critters: Books about Big Sky Country

Book Reviews

The first days of winter are upon us and one might be looking for a more warm and indoor entertainment.

A good book can satisfy both the young and old reading enthusiast.

There were four new Montana based books released in 2016 one might consider.

Arcadia Publishing and the History Press released the following three new reads.

The 1959 Yellowstone Earthquake by Larry Morris reveals first hand experiences of the survivors and first responders.

The survivors share an insight to their arrival to the earthquake area. Their experience camping, working or just passing through before and after the damage was done.

The first responders from the air and land were both awed and confused by conflicting reports that took several hours to sort out.

All these individuals carry their stories through to the fiftieth anniversary that was held in August of 2009.

Montana Americana Music by Aaron Parrett goes as far back as the Lewis and Clark Expedition when members would “jam” with Indian drummers.

Parrett even touches on the local Phillips County outlaws, the Curry brothers, who were known to entertain.

Montana has had several various groups create albums for all to listen to and Parrett touches on the 1970’s when the Mission Mountain Wood Band and the Lost Highway Band both first claimed fame.

Montana’s melting pot of talent in verse, voices, instrumental knowledge and ethnicity all contribute to the Big Sky version of Americana music.

The Beartooth Highway by Jon Axline has created a history behind what Charles Kuralt labeled “America’s most beautiful drive”.

The organizing and lobbying for the building of the highway runs the gamut of politics to punishing mountain weather.

Axline takes us over the mountain into Wyoming and back with scenic lookouts and narrow escapes by workers and the sightseers who just can’t wait until the project is done.
