PC CattleWomen recognizes bumper sticker winners at Agriculture Day

The Phillips County CattleWomen sponsor the “Ag in Montana Schools” bumper sticker contest each year. This contest is open to all Phillips County school youth grades 1st through 5th. The County Superintendent, Darlene Kolczak and area school teachers work together to inform youth of the importance of the agricultural community that they live in.

The youth create a bumper sticker depicting what Ag means to them. These bumper stickers are judged on the county level. The winners this year are: Kindergarten – Rachel Anderson from Whitewater, First Grade – Hazel Sones from Saco, Second Grade – Mylee Clark from Whitewater, Third Grade – Sommer Green from Whitewater, Fourth Grade – Shelbi LaBrie from Whitewater and Fifth Grade – Josie Brown from Saco. These bumper stickers where displayed at Ag Day by the Phillips County CattleWomen and each youth received a gift card to Joe's In and Out for a cheeseburger meal. All top winners of each county are judged on the State level. Phillips County youth, Josie Brown, was unable to attend Ag Day because she was in Helena at a ceremony for the top winners in the State.

Brown’s bumper sticker read “Montana What Makes Montana Complete” and depicted a field of golden wheat in the foreground with a fiery sky in the background.

“The field looks really pretty during sunset and the sunset really shows them off,” Brown said of the inspiration of her sticker design. Josie said that if you drive south of her home in Saco during sunset the view you’d likely see would resemble her sticker entry. Though Josie is fond of art — her pieces have placed at local shows and one of her drawings was used in the 2017 WIFE calendar — she wasn’t at all confident that she would take first place among Phillips County fifth graders, let alone the entire state of Montana’s fifth graders.

“I wished I had more time,” Josie said of her thoughts upon completion of the piece.

Green, who took first in the third grade competition, drew green and yellow fields housing a steer and cows near a large red barn with the slogan “Montana Prairie Grasses Grow The Best Cattle You Will Ever Know.”

“We have lots of cows that are calving and lots of hay,” Green said. “We even have a barn like that.”

Sones’ sticker read “Animals in Montana Feed the World” and she drew a cow, herself, the planet earth, a sheep and a cat.

“The cow’s name is Rowdy, the person is me, the sheep doesn’t have a name and the cat’s name is Tom,” she said.

Clark’s winning entry in the third grade category read “Nobody Can Beat Montana Wheat” and was adorned with blue ribbons and a golden stalk of wheat.

“I am proud of Montana wheat and I was just thinking about how great Montana wheat is,” Clark said of her motivation with the piece.

Honorable mentions bumper stickers were: Kindergarten – Ava Schultz, Nichole Volk and Rhiaunna Simonson, First Grade – Royce Stobbe, Samuel Simonson and Rory Green, Second Grade – Theo Anderson, Third Grade – Amanda Volk, Tyler Scheffelmear, and Austin Hanely, Fourth Grade – Jessa Erickson, Blaine Downing and Evelyn Anderson and Fifth Grade – Kendall Scheffelmear, LaShanna Keith and Abby Yeska. Congratulations to all youth.
