Free beginning knitting, gadget classes to be offered in Malta

Are you neat with knitting needles but all thumbs when it comes to technology?

Maybe you are the opposite and keep your technology devices in pristine, up-to-date condition but don't know the difference between a popcorn or garter stitch. If you fall in any of the above categories, there are two classes coming up that might be right up your alley.

If you are gadget-challenged (or, your phone, tables, or electronic device is giving you fits) the Bring Your Own Gadget Class will be hosted at the Phillips County Library on Thursday, April 6 starting at 5 p.m. and running until 7 p.m. Interested participants are encouraged to RSVP with Phillips County Librarian Janeen Brookie, register online at itstriangle.com/free-training or call Angela at 394-2862.

On Monday, the free classes move from technology to old-school, hand's on creation. On April 10, a free Knitting for Beginners Class will be held at the Phillips County Library starting at 6 p.m.

Brookie said that during a recent survey conducted by the Malta Chamber of Commerce, learning to knit was one of the most popular requests.

Brookie said that two different ways to knit will be taught at the class, Continental Style (to be taught by Kathy Bagley) and the English Style.

"They are just different ways you move your hands," Brookie said.

Potential students for the class are asked to call the class, students are asked to bring 1 Skein Worsted Yarn and size 8 needles (either circular or straight.)

Both the classes are held in conjunction with Triangle Communications, the Malta Chamber of Commerce and the HiLine Technology Committee.

Brookie said that in the past, most people learned to knit from elder family members. Today, Brookie hears a lot of people say they learn the craft by watching online videos. Though the April 10 class is the only beginners class scheduled thus far, Brookie said that she would be willing to meet with the "beginners" classes and said that she hosts a weekly, Thursday afternoon "hand work group" which meets from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the PC Library.
