Mustangs place in 2B Meet

Malta fourth in District, look to improve at Northern B

The Malta Mustangs took fourth place at the 2B District Track Meet in Wolf Point last Saturday, May 13.

Glasgow won the meet with 244 points. Wolf Point took second with 117.5, Harlem was third with 100.5 points and Poplar took fifth with 12 points.

The Mustangs scored 49 points at the meet and were led by senior Jace Bishop, who placed third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:11.84, a season best. Bishop also took fourth in high jump after clearing 5-6.

Freshman Tanner Smith took third place in high jump after clearing 5-8, a new personal best. He took fifth in the 200 with a time of 25.58 and fifth in triple jump with a length of 36-11 ½.

Smith had just missed out on qualifying in long jump, one of his earlier events but he knew what he had to do to perform well in later events.

“Focus,” Smith said. “Focus.”

Tel Jenson took third in the 110 hurdles with a season best of 18.31. He also placed fourth in the triple jump with a season best length of 37-04.

The short relay team consisting of Andres Lopez, Kolter Schipman, Smith and Bishop took third with a time of 48.80.

“The relay was good,” Smith said. “I think the handoffs were pretty good.”

Lopez was the first leg and felt he set a nice tone.

“My start was pretty good,” Lopez said. “Usually my start is terrible but I did pretty good this time.”

The relay hopes to see continued improvement by working hard in practice.

“We just gotta practice hard,” he said. “Practice our handoffs. We had been practicing a whole lot last week and I’m pretty sure that’s how we got good handoffs this race.”

The long relay team consisting of Epperson, Lopez, Schipman and Bishop took fourth place with a time of 4:05.88.

Lopez took fourth in shot put with a throw of 40-06 1/2. Lopez had a plan to help improve his chances of placing in the final round.

“I gotta warm up before and just throw it my hardest,” he said before the event.

He wasn’t too pleased with his throw in finals.

“It wasn’t my best throw,” he said noting that his personal best was a 41-03. “I’m just going to practice it a lot next week.”

Jalen Jamb took fifth place in javelin with a throw of 123-7, inches away from his personal best of 124-0.

Lamb also took sixth place in shot put with a throw of 37-08.
