"Street Lights for Malta" read the headline in the paper for this week and a further comment was that the City Council was working on plans for a magnificent light display.

Draft plans were completed and lots were drawn for the selective service draft. Each number drawn represented 40,000 men.

With the front brick wall nearly finished, construction on the new Edwards and McLellan building was progressing rapidly with the building promising to be one the finest in town.

The Trafton-Dorr store was advertising men's athletic union suits of nainsook, no sleeves, knee length, at $1.25 each, in both natural and white.

The new home of Al Winkler, popular clerk at the Edwards and McLellan store, was being painted and the finishing touches were being added before the Winkler family moved in.

The Ellison-White Chautauqua was advertised highly and the Saco band made a trip to Malta for the purpose of advertising the coming event. "Fighting" Governor Carlson of Colorado was scheduled at the Chautauqua.

An announcement was made by Lieutenant Governor J.H. Lesselyong to the effect that all Kiwanis State Conventions have been called off for the duration of the war.

City may get Jap labor camp here

A plan to establish in Malta a labor reserve of Japanese furloughed from west coast detention camps, got under way here this week as the farm security administration organization set about exercising a provision in the law permitting small labor camps to be set up.

Designed to help the critical labor shortage which this region faces as harvest time approaches, the plan would be to utilize idle CCC buildings in Trafton Park. There has been no assurance that such a camp will be authorized, but local government officials said authority was possible under existing laws if the communities involved did not object.

Only 10 days until fair time

The Phillips County Fair is only 10 days away, but preparations for the 52nd annual event at Dodson are nearly completed, according to Marion Waters, fair secretary.

The most unusual item at the fair this year, Waters says, should be the Gene Holter Movieland Animals night show at the fair Sunday night. This show has been appearing at the World's Fair in Montreal and is currently playing on the Montana Fair Circuit. Racing ostriches and camels are featured in the two-hour program.

Garbage fee change delayed a year

Malta's City Council voted Tuesday night to postpone changing the garbage rates for one year.

Alderman Karl Harms stated that he had no complaints, either from residents or business people, that could justify changes.

"No one has said they are paying too much or too little," he said.

Mayor Byron Ereaux said the City will have to serve notice that there will have to be recycling implemented and cardboard boxes will have to be broken down or stacked inside each other to facilitate garbage pickup.

Harms answered that he feels people have gotten the message, and will make an effort.
