One Nation, Under God

Doris Marie Matsch

Doris Marie (Cummings) Matsch, of Spokane Wash., was born February 3, 1931 in Malta, Mont., to Newton and Etta Cummings. She died December 17, 2017 in Spokane, Wash., after a short battle with cancer.

Doris grew up on a cattle ranch near Regina, then moved to town with her siblings to attend Malta High School. After graduation in 1948, she moved to Spokane to attend Kinman Business University. In 1950 she joined Alpha Iota Business Sorority, which she remained very active in until this fall. She married Walter Matsch on November 7, 1953 and was preceded in death by him in 1993. Together they raised five kids, who were so blessed to have her as their Mom. If one of her kids or grandkids needed cookies for a bakesale, a donation for a fundraiser, had a recital, a school or sporting event, or needed a leader for a group they were involved with, she was there. When Walt retired from the Spokane Fire Department and most of the kids still had college in their future, she went to work at Murphy Favre Investment Corp. She retired from there when "it wasn't fun to work there anymore." And did she ever love to travel! Mom, along with most of the rest of her family, was also a loyal Cougs and Zags fan.

Survivors include her kids - Jackie (Steve) Myers and daughter Stephanie, Gregg (Karen) and daughters Katie, Jessie, Kini - fiance Anthony, Ruth McCarthy (Mark) and daughter Shannon Janke (Ryan) and son Randy Klein, Wayne (Terri) and daughters Jennifer and Kaci - fiance Cameron, and Roger. She has 3 great granddaughters - Rowan and Harlow Janke and Victoria Rasmussen. Also surviving are her sister Ruth Smith and sister in law Sandra Cummings (brother Everett preceded her in death), her nieces and nephews and numerous cousins. Anyone who met her became family!

A special thank you to Hospice, and to Anna (from Love At Home Senior Care), who took such loving care of her. Spokane is lucky to have the awesome services of both these groups.

Her immediate family gathered after Christmas to share memories of life with her. A celebration of her life will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, rememberances may be made to Hospice of Spokane, or Mom's personal favorite Spokane charities - Rypien Foundation or Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery.
