Heavy snowfall, cold temps blanket area

When it was snowing, temperatures dropped well below zero last week as the winter of 2018 continues to pound Phillips County.

In Malta, snow started falling around 6 a.m. last Wednesday and didn't stop until approximately supper time on Thursday.

Tanja Fransen from the US National Weather Service's Glasgow office told the PCN that when she was in Malta on Thursday night she measured the snow at the high school at 7.5-inches and said that there has already been a total of 10.7-inches in town for the month of February.

Early weather reports last week said that Zortman was to receive the most snowfall during last week's blizzard and though total snowfall has not been reported in the area for last week, Fransen said that the area has already received over 75-inches of snow this winter.

Following the heavy snow, temperatures dropped down to anywhere from -30 to as much as -50 and lower (with the Windchill) in some areas and in Dodson, town water pipes burst leaving many without water for several days.

Back in Malta, Mayor John Demarais enlisted the help of private local companies to assist the Public Works Team in removing snow from City streets and avenues and into vacant lots or where ever it would fit. Crew worked diligently, up and running by 5 a.m. in Wednesday and then continued to work through the week, only stopping on Sunday for a day of rest before getting back after it on Sunday morning.
