100 years ago

March 7, 1918

Phillips County was called upon to furnish 15 men out of 521 called in the state for military service. "Bonafide agricultural workers whose numbers are called, will be passed for the time being but those who fail to hit the ball in an agricultural way, will be yanked into military service," says the old Enterprise.

Charles Wesley Wilson and Pansy Schempp of Freewater were married at the Schempp home by Rev. H.G. Cowan. Curtis Smith and Miss Mildred Wilson, the bridegroom's sister, were in attendance.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Facey.

An ice jam on Alkali Creek had been dynamited to save the bridge.

Robert Clarkson had resigned as Phillips County agent to farm in the Wagner area. A new county agent, W. P. Stapleton, was soon to arrive to succeed Clarkson.

March 11, 1942

Patriotic musical being prepared by children

Uncle Sam, the Statue of Liberty, soldiers, sailors, marines, Red Cross nurses, and a tough top sergeant will appear in a musical playlet "The Spirit of Liberty" being prepared by pupils of the Malta Grade School for presentation at the City Hall on Saturday, March 19.

The musical playlet was written by Robert M. Scriver, the high school music supervisor. It is a story with solo characters and a chorus of 150 to 200 children's voices.

New Co-op store is opened in Dodson

The Farmers Union Mercantile is open for business in Dodson, having taken over the New Local Lumber Company. A general mercantile business, lumber, hardware, and repair business will be operated.

The new business is a co-operative venture, owned by people of the Dodson community. Lloyd Fry is president of the company; Delmar Goodson, secretary-treasurer, and Harry Ofstoe, Nathan V. French and Selmer Rambeer, directors.

World Prayer Day to be observed Friday

The World Day of Prayer service to be held at the Little White Church Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock will be divided into six sections, four Malta churches taking part in the service. The service, which is held on the First Friday of Lent, has been observed in Malta for the last several years.

March 14, 1968

Buffalo at Russell Range Headquarters

A small group of spectators met in Lewistown to watch the first of two buffalo being unloaded at the Charles M. Russell Wildlife Range headquarters.

Two-year-old bull and cow were removed from the Leo B. Coleman Wildlife enclosure at Fort Peck and hauled to Lewistown on March 6. The transfer of animals was made to prevent inbreeding in the small heard at Fort Peck.

Power blackout Sunday night caused by auto hitting pole

A power blackout Sunday night extending from Dodson to Havre, north to Turner and Hogeland and south to the communities of Hays, Landusky and Zortman was the result of a car hitting a guy wire pole.

The accident occurred about 11 p.m. Sunday on Highway 2 about 1/4th of a mile west of Dodson. Harold Peterson of Chinook was en route to Malta when he apparently went to sleep at the wheel. His car went off the road on the north side of the highway and struck a guy wire pole. The strain of guy wire caused a power pole on the south side of the highway to break, breaking the electric wires. The blackout lasted as long as an hour in some areas.

Green, Kienenberger win conservation awards Friday

Presentation of awards was one of the principle activities at the annual meeting of the Phillips Soil and Water Conservation District last week.

George Green of Wagner was presented with a certificate of recognition as the outstanding conservation farmer for 1967 as chosen by the district. W. C. Kienenberger of Dodson received the award for the best tree windbreak planting in the district. His son, Dean, accepted the award in his absence.

Baker edges Malta Matmen for state B and C title

The Malta Mustang wrestlers ended the season with a runner-up spot in the Class B-C state honors. The Mustangs were defeated by Baker by one point for the state title.

Larry Olson placed fourth in the 154-pound class which was one of the strongest classes at the meet. Larry is a junior and will be heard from next year, according to Coach Glenn Flatt.

Phillips County Spelling Bee Champ

Anna Barthelmess, a seventh-grader at Tallow Creek, is this year's Phillips County Spelling Bee winner. She is the daughter of Darla and Leo Barthelmess. Runner-up honors went to Michelle Komis, an eighth-grade student at Malta Middle School. She is the daughter of Larry and Marilyn Komis.

Dodson student earns state geo bee spot

Robert Kurtz, an eighth student at Dodson Schools, has qualified to compete in the state geography bee in Helena at Capital High School.

He is the son of Bruce and Robin Warren of Dodson.

Monster Lamb

A lamb weighing 22 pounds made its way into this world February 19 at the Jean and Jeanie Green Ranch at Whitewater. She was a single from yearling ewe. The lamb is a cross between Suffolk and Columbia. According to Jeanie, the lamb was up and eating within seven minutes of being born as if to say "I must maintain."
