100 years ago

May 16, 1918

A party consisting of Harry Cosne, County Attorney Fred C. Gabriel, Sheriff Crabb and C. H. Stevens motored to Greve in the interests of the council of defense. One man had failed to register, and another who was contesting a soldier's claim "found himself at the end of his rope until the war is over."

R. V. Tucker was laid up for repairs as the result of having been thrown from a plow. He was thrown across a wheel and received two broken ribs.

An oil well was being drilled by a group of local men. The site was north of Bowdoin.

Another Phillips County bootlegger was apprehended at Whitewater and the county treasury was $100 richer.

75 years ago

May 13, 1943

Industry training from 16 to 25 age group

Openings for young men and women between the ages of 16 and 25 are now available in the NYA war production training center at Helena, where they may obtain free training in vital trades and skills.

Training, under the instruction, is offered in machine shop, ratio mechanics, welding, sheet metal working, auto mechanics and stenography. The training is free and in addition, students have an opportunity to earn $15.90 a month while on the project. Those living outside the dormitory earn $40 a month.

Four Cub Scout packs expected to be organized

At least four packs of Cub Scouts are expected to be organized at a meeting this Thursday evening. J. H. Rostad has been appointed Cubmaster. The packs will be made up of about eight boys each.

Rearing pond for fish at Bowdoin

The State Fish and Game Commission, the Soil Conservation Service and the Wildlife Service are cooperating in a move to make northern Montana a fisherman's paradise and to ease the strain on the family pocketbook during the war period.

State Fish and Game officials have approved a rearing pond at the Lake Bowdoin Wildlife Refuge where bass and pike will be reared for planting in government and private stock water reservoirs throughout the area. The commission has furnished eight traps which will be placed in some of the well-stocked reservoirs to catch one, two and three-pound bass, and in the Milk River for trapping pike.

County woman wins record with 127 Leghorn Hens

Topping all extension poultry demonstration farm flocks of more than 100 hens for production during the month of March was the flock owned by Mrs. C. C. Stine of Malta.

Mrs. Stine's 127 white Leghorns laid a total of 2,967 eggs during the month or an average of 23.3 eggs per hen.

May 9, 1968

Dodson Valedictorian, Salutatorian

Terrance Munson is the Valedictorian of the Class of 1968 at Dodson High School. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Munson and has a 3.60 average of a possible 4.00.

Salutatorian for the class is Randy Wilke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Wilke. His grade average is 3.40.

2,961 persons eligible to vote

Clerk and Recorder Rosalene Malony reports that 2,961 persons had registered to vote in the June primary election in Phillips County when registration closed April 25. This is down from the 1966 primary registration which was 3,093.

Editor's Note: Phillips County has 2,458 registered voters as of April 18, 2018.

Fewer named to Shrine game

Pat Fewer will be the lone representative from Malta High School who was selected for next the 1968 East-West Shrine football game. Fewer is the son of Mrs. Charles Fewer and he was an outstanding tackle on this year's Mustang squad and will be playing that position on the East team.

Anderson named Valedictorian at Whitewater

Shane Anderson will lead the Whitewater Class of 1993 to graduation exercises Friday night as valedictorian.

Classmate Chad Simonson is salutatorian.

Mr. Anderson is the son of Gary Anderson and Pattie Matthews.

Mr. Simonson is the son of Gail and LeRoy Simonson.

Mr. Anderson is the student body president and Mr. Simonson is the vice president. Pippin named the valedictorian, Pleninger salutatorian at Saco

Brenda Pippin, daughter of Larry and Beverly Pippin, is the 1993 valedictorian of Saco High School.

Brenda has been involved in 4-H, S Club, Student Council, National Honor Society, BPA, speech and drama, basketball, track, cheerleading, pep club, Montana Academic Olympics, and has attended the Hugh O'Brien Youth Conference and Montana Girl's State.

Crystal Pleninger, daughter of Sarah Brown, is the 1993 Saco High School salutatorian.

Crystal has been in BPA, Vice President of the Honor Society, secretary of her senior class, and a member of the pep club.
