Saco girls third at District

The Dodson, Saco and Whitewater track teams each participated in the 2018 District 3C Meet in Glasgow.

The Saco Lady Panthers took home third place with a total of 72 points. The Panthers finished fifth with 30.5. The Whitewater Penguins took fourth place with 42 points, while the Lady Penguins took sixth with 28. The Dodson Lady Coyotes took eighth place with 12 points, while the Dodson Coyotes took ninth with one point.

The qualifying athletes will continue onto the Eastern C Divisional, set to be held in Glasgow on Thursday, May 17, with the hopes to make it to the MHSA Class AA-C State Track & Field Meet in Great Falls on Friday, May 25 through Saturday, May 26.

Women

Saco senior Bailey Funk took first place in pole vault after clearing 9-0. Funk took second place in triple jump by leaving a mark at 31-6.25, a season's best. She also took second in the 100 with a time of 14.64 and second in long jump after leaving a mark at 14-9.

Funk also took fourth in the 200 with a time of 30.84.

Saco senior Sydney Zeller took second place in the high jump after clearing 4-4, third in long jump after leaving a mark at 14-5.25, third in the 200 with a time of 30.84, fourth in the 100 with a time of 15.14, and fourth in the 800 with a season best of 2:44.26.

Whitewater freshman Kia Wasson took first place in the 3200 meter run with a time of 12:58.51 and second in the 1600 with a time of 5:57.25.

Dodson sophomore Christina Jaynes took second place in discus with a personal best of 99-9 and fourth in shot put with a throw of 30-3.

Whitewater freshman Kelsee Cummings took third in shot put with a personal best of 32-0, fourth in discus with a personal best of 83-3, and eighth in the 200 with a personal best of 33.44.

Saco senior Challise Young took fifth place in the 400 with a personal best of 1:44.42. She also qualified in discus by taking eighth place with a throw of 63-9 and eighth in shot put with a throw of 20-10.75.

Saco freshman Jaydyn Erickson took fifth place in high jump after clearing 4-0, sixth in the 1600 with a time of 7:43.53, sixth in the 100 with a time of 15.44, seventh in the 200 with a time of 33.34, and eighth in javelin with a personal best of 51-11.

Dodson senior Kyla Racine took seventh in the 1600 with a personal best of 8:19.21.

Men

Whitewater senior Trace Simonson led his team by winning high jump by clearing 5-8 and discus by leaving a mark at 147-4. He also took second in shot put with a throw of 41-7.5, and second in triple jump with a mark at 39-3. Simonson has three district discus titles in his high school career.

"I feel pretty good," Simonson said. "I threw pretty well and it was the farthest that I had thrown this year."

His personal best in discus is 148-2, a mark Simonson hopes to pass in his final two meets of the season.

The Glasgow track has become a venue that many Phillips County athletes consider their home track due to the volume of meets that Scottie Field hosts yearly. It was Simonson's last meet or event at Scottie field.

"I like Glasgow, it's pretty good to compete on," Simonson said. "You just have to make the most of it. Do the best I can and move on in everything that I do today."

Saco sophomore Brady Albus won the 800 with a time of 2:04.25 and took sixth with a time of 1:00.45.

Saco's Ty Murphy took second in pole vault by clearing 10-0. Murphy also tied for second in high jump by clearing 5-6.

Whitewater's Cody Scheffelmear tied for second in high jump after clearing 5-6.

Saco junior Josh Salveson, a junior took fifth place in pole vault after clearing 8-0 and took seventh in the 200 with a time of 28.44.

Saco's short relay team consisting of Albus, Chayten Pippin, Murphy and Salveson placed fourth with a time of 53.08.

"There is more pressure," Pippin said about being in his first district meet. "In other track meets you can try your best but here you have to do your best, so there is more pressure on me."

Pippin knew what he had to do to give his team a good leg.

"I have to sprint it and I have to run as fast as I can," Pippin said.

Dodson's David Jaynes took sixth place in shot put with a throw of 37-8.5.

Pippin, a Saco Freshman, took seventh in the 400 with a time of 1:02.85.
