The Payout Was Worth It at Malta Elementary School

Malta Elementary School held its end of the year Accelerated Reading awards assembly recently and 165 students earned the right to spin the wheel for prizes.

Prizes are donated from Malta businesses including: Dairy Queen, Westside Food Court, Horizon Resources, Valley Drug, Stretch's, Albertson's and Joes In & Out.

This year was a big year with totals and reading percents going up. Overall Malta Elementary students earned over 10,488 points. And there were over 13,170 tests taken from grades one through five.

Most improved readers and top point earners at each grade level received "dino dollars" which are donated by The First State Bank, First Security Bank and Independence Bank all of Malta.

Top Points for Each Grade: 1st grade Jace Tollefson 62.3, 2nd grade Flint McEwen 74.3, 3rd grade Emma Ereaux 142.3, 4th grade Alexis Boonstra 219.3, and 5th grade David Schagack 327.7.

The top two students receive a Kindle or a $50.00 gift card to Amazon donated by the Malta Rotary Club: Madelyn Ohl 509.9, and Johnny Wegner 356.9.

Most Improved Readers: 1st grade Colter Sneidiger and Sadie Lamoreau / Corvin Salveson and Hailey Brockie, 2nd grade Kiptyn Bain and Kayla Ottinger, 3rd grade Jackson Bleth and Saydee Kapp, 4th grade Karson Kelsey and Emree Stuart, and 5th grade Mathew Hunter and Danika Wilke.

Thirty-two first graders earned AR t-shirts. To earn a t-shirt, first graders must earn ten points. Since a majority of books at this level are only worth a half point, that means first graders must read at least 20 books to earn that t-shirt, states Mrs. Lynne Nevrivy. T-shirts are donated by Malta Rotary Club.

As an added bonus, when students pass an AR test, they can write their names down to go into a random drawing for "dino dollars". They do not have to get 100%, all they have to do is pass the test. Fifteen names were drawn, three from each grade level.
