Swim team sets new bests in Plentywood

The Malta Swim Team is approaching the midway point of the regular season and the team continues to adjust, faring well in their last meet with only five swimmers.

Each swimmer improved their times and / or placings in the Plentywood meet, though only a handful of swimmers attended the meet.

"It went really well," Malta Swim Coach Shay Garfield said. "Everyone took times off of their best times and we had everyone took first place in at least one event."

Nine-year-old Jahmiah Huffman-LaBrie took first place in the 50 Flystroke (58.04 seconds) and 50 Backstroke (53.09), and fourth place in the 100 IM (1:59.59), giving him a team high 37 points.

Twelve-year-old Lauren Tuss scored 36 points for Malta, winning the 200 Free with a time of 3:13.87, taking second in the 50 Breaststroke (50.26, and taking third in the 200 IM with a time of 3:48.81.

Fourteen-year-old Darrow Messerly scored 34 points for Malta, winning the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:24.73 and taking third in the 50 Free (31.13) and third in the 200 IM (3:08.10).

Ten-year-old Denvyr Tuss also scored 34 points, taking first place in the 50 Backstroke with a time of 46.99, third in the 50 Free with a time of 39.49 and third in the 50 Fly with a time of 54.40.

Fourteen-year-old Connor Tuss scored 30 points, taking second in the 100 backstroke (1:27.61) and fouth in the both the 200 IM (3:10.97) and in the 200 Free (2:54.76).

The team had 11 swimmers in the Roundup Meet on Saturday, June 16, to Sunday, June 17. The team placed sixth out of 10 teams. Huffman and Jillian O'Brien both scored 33 points each.

As the season has progressed the numbers seem low but according to Coach Garfield there was a reason that Malta only had five kids last weekend.

"It's just a far drive," Coach Garfield said. "This time of the month people have lots of camps to do, kids are tired and this was just a long way out of the way."

The team will be headed to Glendive this weekend. The meet kicks off on Saturday, June 30, and will conclude on Sunday, July 1.
