Chamber, local taverns host Summer Olympics in Malta

The motto of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was “a new world.”

The motto of the first ever Malta Area Chamber of Commerce Summer Olympics could be “a new tradition.”

On Saturday, July 14, The Malta Chamber will be hosting the inaugural Summer Olympics at bars across the city of Malta.

“At each bar around town, there will be an athletic-ish event for the Summer Olympics,” Malta Chamber Director Ann Sautter said. “For instance, Lawn Jenga has been talked about; Corn Hole, Norwegian Horseshoes. One bar has talked about a golf-related event and another is doing bowling.”

Sautter said that teams of four will compete at the Summer Olympics events at the Tin Cup, Lucky Bullet, Stockman, The Mint Bar, The Great Northern, VFW, Westside Casino, and Kid Curry’s Lounge. Teams can pre-register now by contacting Sautter at the Malta Chamber’s social media pages, by stopping by the office or calling 654-1776, or by showing up at the Great Northern the night of the event with registration starting at 6 p.m. and ending at 6:30 p.m. There is a $60 entry fee for each team of four people. The event will go until 10 p.m. ending on the Stockman Terrace where the first-place team will receive their awards and the bar with the best event will also receive recognition.

“Teams will be awarded points throughout the night, so that is how first place is determined, and then we will have pictures of all the events of the bars on Facebook and the people can vote for the best game,” Sautter said. “The winning team receives Dino Dollars and a Trophy.”

Sautter said that the Malta Chamber is looking to get more involved with the bars and restaurants around town and added that she thinks the Summer Olympics are a good addition to the Putt Crawl the Chamber holds each fall.

“We wanted to come up with something fun for the summer and I think this will be just that,” she concluded.
