P.C. Fair Sports Preview Recap

The P.C. Fair is offering plenty of entertainment in the realm of sports this weekend. Here is a recap of what is coming to the Grandstands in Dodson.

For the first time in recent history, the Phillips County Fair is holding a Youth Rodeo on Thursday, August 2, as the opening Grandstand Event.

The event which starts at 7 p.m. will include a Pony Race for kids aged 11 and under, and an Open Saddle Horse Race for kids aged 10-18 at 6 p.m.

"In the saddle horse race they will just race around the track once, for a half a mile," Joey Kill Eagle the event's coordinator said. "We might have two (Pony races) on those races depending (how many) on miniature Shetlands, miniature ponies and regular ponies."

As for the Youth Rodeo, events are broken down in four sections depending on the age and sex or the rider. For girls aged 8-13 there will be barrel racing, pole bending and breakaway roping. For boys aged 8-13 there will be breakaway roping and steer riding.

For girls ages 14-18 there will be barrel racing, pole bending, and breakaway roping. For boys ages 14-18 breakaway roping, chute dogging, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, ranch bronc riding, and junior bull riding.

This year's Phillips County Fair AMX Racing event is scheduled on Saturday, August 4, at 12 p.m., before the Bash for Cash event, which will be held later that day. Prices for this Grandstand event is $10 per adult and $5 per child.

The event consists of opening heat races, main races, Pitman races and Powderpuff races, all on the dirt track in the Grandstand Arena.

Frank Kindle explained what the crowd will see when they attend an AMX race, often referred to as the Bump and Run.

"You will see some bumping and rubbing," Kindle said. "You will see a couple of spinouts. You might see some people roll. We hope we don't roll but there's always a rollover."

Expect to see plenty of crashes, flames and more as the Phillips County Fair Bash for Cash Demolition Derby is scheduled to start on Saturday, August 4, at 6 p.m.

Tickets for the Grandstand event will be $15 per adult and $5 per child 5-12 years of age.

Chinook's Scott Skoyen, the event's coordinator shared what the crowd will see at the 3rd Annual Bash for Cash event.

"You're going to see all kinds of cars," Skoyen said. "Parts falling off, cars with bumpers pointed straight in the air. It's just a total wreck from the go. With your weld cars, you are going to see a lot of horsepower and hear a lot of noise. We're talking upwards to 400 horsepower engines in these cars. There will be some cars that people have shelled from $5,000 to $10,000 into the cars. It's just extreme."

For the second consecutive year, the Phillips County Fair Grounds will be the site of the Nile Sanctioned P.C. Saddle Club Ranch Rodeo.

The event will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 5, in between the P.C. Fair's Indian Relay Races. Being in the middle of the horse races last year netted the Ranch Rodeo it's largest crowd in recent years, with the co-event hosting a total of 1,598 spectators.

"I thought it went really good," said Scott Meeks of the P.C. Saddle Club. "I think it turned out pretty good for the first go at the fair."

The Ranch Rodeo event which can qualify the winning team for the Northern International Livestock Exposition or the Nile in Billings was previously held at the Trafton Rodeo Arena in Malta.

The Indian Relay Race is coming back to the Phillips County Fair on Sunday, August 5.

The one and a half mile horse race, in which riders will have to switch horses three times, made such an impression that it will be back for its second consecutive year, with even more action. Including a third qualifying heat, two more teams, and a youth race.

This year's event hosted by The P.C. Fair Board and Northeast Corner Committee will also feature $15,000 in payouts.

This year's event will feature 12 teams that will be split into three opening heats.

"Last year we did two heats to qualify for the consolation and championship," KillEagle said. "Last year we did two heats of five, this year we will do three heats of four."
