One Nation, Under God
Though the total entries at this year's Phillips County Fair Open Class are down a bit from last year, the contest continues to ride a resurgence which started at 2015's 100th fair in Dodson and continues to delight fair-goers.
"Even though we are down this year, we are tickled pink by the number of entries this year," Phillips County Fair Board's Joy Linn said. "People thought the entries in Open Class would die off after the 100th anniversary but they haven't, so we are really excited about the future here for Open Class."
This year, a total of 2,279 projects were entered - 2,528 in 2017, 2,138 in 2016, and 2,252 in 2015 - and a total of $5,162 in premiums were paid out of the total of $17,516 that were offered. Though needlework and hobbies continue to be the most popular department again this year, the total entries were down from 1,070 in 2017 to 864 this year. All six area schools were exhibitors this year and combined for a total of 468 entries; community exhibitors totaled three to combine for six entries judged; floriculture entries totaled 202 this year (239 in 2017); and both Culinary and Grain Grass Vegetable & Fruit were up from last year, with Culinary entries totaling 356 (336 last year) and 376 Grain Grass Vegetable & Fruit entries, shooting up from 361 in 2017 to a total of 376 entries this year.
Linn told the PCN that there will be several changes made to next year's Open Class which will include an added photography division for more advanced photographers and some Native American craft divisions. Linn said she hopes to have the 2019 Open Class Premium lists done by January and once they are complete, look for a story in the Phillips County News highlighting those changes.
