Welcoming Veterans and guests to the VFW Club are two benches which have a refreshing and bright appearance with a touch up. The benches are in memory of Veteran Mike McEwen and were recently anonymously treated to fresh paint and upgrading. American Legion groups donated towards upgrades needed by Phillips County 4H Shooting Sports. James Barnard and the other instructors of the Phillips County Shooting Sports presented a list of repair parts needed, consumable items needed, archery products wanted, and new guns wanted to purchase so the kids could better compete against others at the state competition. As the Thanksgiving Day gatherings are over and the Christmas season festivities approach, American Legion Post 57 (and other Veterans Associations) gratuitously gives thanks to the community for its support of our goals and the monetary help in our donations to community functions. As has been the normal for several years there is no meetings scheduled in July and August. The next meeting of Post 57 and Squadron 57 will be on September 17th at the VFW Club. District 2 and Post 57 commander Vincent Schmoeckel attended the 100th State convention in late June at Polson, Mont., where our Post's display of information on the history of the 1st State Convention held in 1919 in Malta took the 3rd place prize in the state post's Anniversary contest. Recently Post 57 supported the local baseball team by paying over $500 to cover their insurance / entry fee into the regional American Legion Baseball League. Along with 40 to 60 other spectators at Trafton Park, I really enjoyed their play on June 6th's double-header against Wolf Point. They won the 7 inning first game by 13-10 and were leading 5-1 in the second game when it was rained out. A two-year project to update the maps and lists of veterans in all Phillips County locations (cemeteries and other areas ) is about 50% complete. Ninety to 100% of the veterans buried in Malta, Zortman, Landusky, Forks, Sun Prairie, Sunny Slope, and as much info as time permits of the Saco, Dodson, and Rietan Cemeteries will be on display on Memorial Day on May 27th. We've just completed our annual garage sale fundraiser so we can support more community projects. The Post 57's recent and future activities include - donations to - old "stagecoach" restoration, plans to sponsor 1 or 2 local boys to attend Boys State activities, planning a bigger Memorial Day celebration, and supporting with help or donations to other community groups and projects. It was a mournful community as several well known members who were Veterans and other long time residents of the area are no longer with us. The composite Honor Guards of Sons of the American Legion, Legion, and VFW did or will do their part in military honors for these Veterans. The Auxillary helped also. Our condolences to all. Although the Sons of the American Legion has only been active in the Malta/ Saco area for less than 3 years, they have been in existence elsewhere for a lot longer. The Veterans of WW II and earlier conflicts encountered many individuals and relatives who patriotically supported all veterans. To offer the non-veterans a group to channel their energy into the Sons of the American Legion was organized. All Veterans are invited to the Christmas Party on January 12th. Great food, memories, and $400 in door prizes will be enjoyed. On December 18th the Raffle tickets were shuffled and 4 names drawn. In our February meeting, we were given a presentation by two students from Malta High School on their planned trip of 13 students to Washington D.C. to view how government works as promoted by the Close - Up org. We subsequently voted to donate $500.00 towards their trip of one week in mid-April. In our May meeting, they provided us a report on the knowledge gained and other highlights of their trip. Among the more recent donations are $1000.00 to the Shooting Sports Program, $500.00 to The Boys and Girls Club, $100 to Malta's Walleyes...
