Attention Phillips County high school graduating seniors. Graduation will be here soon and now is the time to apply for scholarships. The Mustang Foundation has four Veseth Scholarships to be given to seniors graduating from any high school in Phillips County. Each scholarship is $1,000.00 and is given after the student has completed one semester of college or trade school and has turned in a sealed copy of their grades to the Mustang Foundation. Recently members of the Malta Dirt Daubers Garden Club, assisted by volunteers from Malta Kiwanis, decorated 50 oak barrels located throughout down town Malta.. Each barrel received a colorful birdhouse setting near a small white picket fence decorated with spring flowers. The birdhouses and white fences had all been painted by members as a special project to beautify Malta. Later, as weather permits, colorful petunias will be placed in the barrels....
Once again, the students in Mrs. Veit's and Mrs. Blunt's second grade classrooms at Malta Elementary School have had a very busy week becoming paleontologists. Mrs. Blunt reports that this is the 15th year for the children's Dino Museum Reports and Displays. Once again the students of Malta Elementary School are collecting the pull tabs from the tops of aluminum cans. The tabs will be collected by the Kiwanis on Thursday, January 17. If you have any pull tabs, please take them to the school or give them to a student to take to their class. There is a competition between classes to see who collects the most tabs. The aluminum tabs are recycled by the MHS Key Club and funds are donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Billings. Tabs will be collected again in mid May....
Once again members of the Malta Boys and Girls Club entered the PC Fair with various projects. The children entered over 50 small floral designs and also various silly animals made with vegetables fastened together with toothpicks. Throughout Montana, Kiwanis members are currently supporting their local CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) programs. The children at the Malta Boys and Girls' Club recently spent a busy afternoon making small floral bouquets to enter in the 101st Phillips County Fair. The Dirt Daubers Garden Club, under the direction of Toni Ziegler, sponsored the event with help from the Malta Kiwanis. Members of the Malta Key Club, with much help from the elementary students, were able to collect over 86 pounds of pull-tabs from aluminum cans. It is estimated that there are 1,200 pull tabs per pound which means the students collected about 103,000 pull tabs this year. The pull-tabs are recycled and the funds support the Ronald McDonald House in Billings. Malta High School and Malta Elementary School librarian Lynn Nevrivy was recently honored with a special award for her many, many years of promoting literacy throughout the community. In mid-October, over 400 school librarians and teachers met in Belgrade, Mont., for the Montana State Literacy Conference. Mr. Lerma previously taught English at East Glacier High School and will now teach sixth grade reading and sophomore and junior English. Malta's newest science teacher, Kara Bates, comes to us from Plains, MT. Bates holds two Bachelor of Science degrees, one in secondary science education and another degree in microbiology. Both degrees were earned at MSU Bozeman. Her last year was spent in Plentywood, MT, where she student taught high school science. Members of the Malta Dirt Daubers Flower Club spent a very busy Sunday after-noon decorating over fifty wooden barrels located throughout the Malta business area. Each barrel was decorated in an autumn theme with scare crows, pumpkins, corn stalks, and various gourds. The club has been decorating the large barrels for over ten years. A graduate of the U of M in Missoula, she has a B.A. in Secondary English Education for grades five through high school. New science teacher Mr. Robert Twiggs is now kept busy teaching sixth-through-eighth grade science, replacing retired teacher Mr. Andy Otteson. He most recently taught sixth grade in Browning, MT, and has taught in several other towns. He grew up in Troy, Mont., and later joined up with the U.S. Army.
