VFW Auxiliary is offering contests for grades 6-12. Patriot Pen is for grades 6-8 and is offered to any student in those grades. They must be enrolled in a public, private or parochial school or home study program in the U.S. and its territories. The student does not have to be related to a VFW or VFW Auxiliary member to participate, but all entries must be submitted to a local VFW Post. Deadline is October 31. The members of Malta Senior Center are planning a St. Paddy’s soup dinner in March if circumstances allow. The center hasn’t had a dinner since last March when it hosted the Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner amid a spring snow storm. It was announced there was no Shanghai rummy at this time but would be looked into the future. Bingo will resume on Fridays at 1:00 p.m. at the center so get your dimes ready as bingo starts this Friday, January 29th. The Malta Senior Citizens will hold their annual meeting Thursday, January 21, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at the center. Dues of $15.00 are due and necessary for voting privileges. Three director positions, each three year terms, are up: Margaret Leader, who also serves as treasurer, Marlyn Orahood, and Sharon Kindle who serves as secretary. Orahood has announced she will not seek another term; the other two are seeking reelection. Other directors are Leonard Leader and Jerry Depute. Finally, after many cancellations and delays due to illnesses among the Senior Citizen members and others, three lucky names were drawn for the three ANYTHING GOES baskets. First place went to Clair Waters; second to Tom Golick, and third to Sharon Emond who was at the center playing cards as the time of the drawing. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the October 21, 2020 meeting of the Malta Senior Citizens was cancelled and has been rescheduled for Wednesday, November 18, at 9 a.m. at the Senior Center. The basket drawing will take place at that time. Also, Bingo will resume on January 8, 2021 at 1 p.m. at the Center. It is the hopes, guided by everyone’s prayers, the group can host the ever popular free will offering luncheons at the Center beginning in 2021. Saturday March 14, 2020, the Malta Senior Center will host their fifth annual Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. This was our Vice President Leonard Leader’s idea and has become a popular spring event. The festivities run from 11-1 p.m. at the center featuring the famous meal with sides of potatoes and carrots, biscuits and fabulous desserts. Because of the generosity of the community, the Malta Senior Center is continuing to update the facilities. The latest is LED lights on the exterior replacing the dated 1960 era fixtures. We also have an exterior outlet for our Christmas tree and lights eliminating the 'extension cord' fixture. New ballasts were installed in some of the center's ceiling so the interior is completely lit making it easier on the eyes for the card and bingo players. As the leaves turn and begin to fall it signals SOUP TIME!! at the Malta Senior Center, Saturday, November 16, from 11:30-1:30. Many varieties will fill the air with delightful aromas and delicious desserts to round out the fall meal. The Malta Senior Center will celebrate their 50th anniversary on Saturday August 17, 2019 from 1-3 p.m. with cake, coffee and lemonade. The event is open to the public. The Moose Hall, formerly located where the Malta post office sits, was home to the first senior center. Hugh Simanton was the director of the group. In the period of 1968-78 members numbered roughly 260. The period of 1978-96 numbers were around 360. A relief in the subzero temps for this week! We have a huge icicle hanging from the garage so some snow on the roof had to melt! I was in Billings this week and even though they have a lot of snow left down there, I saw two robins and I heard a blue jay! Gives my heart a smile. I know that spring will be here! Live Generously: Hands and Hearts, was the theme on Saturday, March 18 at the Malta Senior Center featuring the Corned Beef and Cabbage annual dinner. The group initiated their new kitchen as it passed the test by serving out around 200 meals, far exceeding the previous year. No matter what your nationality, corned beef is hard to pass up.
