  • Getting candid about decanters

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Jan 4, 2017

Many people return from a Las Vegas trip with nothing more than the shirt on their back, but when Swede and Lois Goodheart returned from a trip to Nevada the couple brought back an item that would start a wonderful collection that would spill into the next 40 years and across their basement. "It was the early 70's and I guess I was looking for a Christmas present for Swede, so I saw those, but I only got one," Lois recalls, pointing to six, 14-inch leprechauns full of Kentucky bourbon ... at...

  • Helping her head home

    Mark Hebert|Jan 4, 2017

It was at the end of July, during the Dog Days of Summer, last year when the topic of Malta’s lone homeless person, very new to the area, became a popular topic on a Facebook page dedicated to things to complain about. But instead of complaining about this new visitor, people wondered what her story was and how she could be helped. Enter Jerry Lytle, Deputy Sheriff at the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office. Lytle was one of the 200 people to see the post about the woman and he decided to put his investigation skills to work. About a month lat...

  • Traipsing across the countryside

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Jan 4, 2017

I keep looking over my shoulder. It’s not because someone may be gaining on me, although I do fear getting caught. It’s because I can’t believe I’m out here in such magnificent country all by myself. Hunting. Surely I must be trespassing or the season is closed. After all, this is public land, open to everyone. So where are they? Am I the only guy who does this anymore? Have all the other hunters quit, lost interest, died? I keep expecting an official looking vehicle to come barreling out my way...

  • I hope the next 364 are better

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Jan 4, 2017

Oy veh! Sorry to start the new year with Yiddish, but day one of 2017 was a bit of a dung downpour. Firstly, it is never correct to say “Happy New Years.” All day long yesterday, social media was on fire with people wishing me a “Happy New Years.” How many years you celebrating this year, Jack? We were celebrating “New Year’s Day” on Sunday and after that, wish people a “Happy New Year.” The day before was “New Year’s Eve” but never, ever ever ever, is it “Happy New Years.” Sorry for that rant. I know I am no grammar expert, but January 1, 2017...

  • Volunteers and Donations: Makes the World Go Around

    Sharon Kindle, PCN Correspondent|Jan 4, 2017

The Malta Senior Center is made up of volunteers as it is a non-profit organization. When an event is held at the center, funds are earmarked for a special project. The furnace is an example as it was almost entirely funded by grants and donations. After that successful project, the center had gutters installed this fall to alleviate ice forming on the sidewalks. The Center experienced a water break which would have shut down the Center and the Food Bank, however, Malta Glass, through the generosity of Craig and Mary Mangis, allowed a hose be...

Happy New Years! I hope that you all have a wonderful, peaceful, and successful year! My Christmas holidays were most enjoyable. Christmas Eve service at the Loring Church was full of tradition, which I love, and innovations which I am learning to embrace! I think there were 50 people in attendance. I had the good fortune to have lunch with Kayla Howard one day in Malta. She has been doing an observation at the physical therapy in the hospital for her college studies. Then on Friday I was happy...
