Sara Pankratz Warren and Mark Warren|Jan 6, 2016

One of the most notable events that took place on the Hi-Line during 2015 was the 100th anniversary of the Phillips County Fair, Montana's longest running fair. A far less publicized anniversary, but something that deserves recognition, is the 150th anniversary of the establishment of Fort Browning two miles southwest of the Dodson fairgrounds. In 1868 the U.S. Government built a trading post/agency for the Gros Ventre (A'aninin). The buffalo were numerous in this area at the time. The site chosen was the south side of the Milk River at the...

  • I owe it to Jem

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Jan 6, 2016

I was ready to be done. Put the guns away. Rest my weary bones. I’ve been hunting since September. Back then it was easy. Crawl out of bed at dark-thirty. Get dressed. Heat the coffee. Load the dogs in the truck and hunt for a couple of hours before it got hot. The easy hunting lasted into November, but the seasons didn’t really change until recently. Now it’s winter. The high today is supposed to be in the mid teens. It’s snowing. The appeal of the warm house is undeniable. But there are onl...

  • Honor Thy Mother and Father

    Brandon Nicholson, Columnist|Jan 6, 2016

Hello friends, family, and Phillips County I hope you all had a wonderful and blessed holiday season! I got the opportunity to spend Christmas and New Years in Malta. Initially, I believed my time would be spent sitting around the house and playing basketball with the girls. This was not the case. I have caught up with more classmates in the past two weeks than I have in the years since we graduated. I have understood since childhood that you gradually grow apart from the friends you make before graduation. However, I never realized how...

  • No new resolution here

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jan 6, 2016

It’s around this time of year I get a real hankering for Mountain Dew. If you know me then you know that my vice used to be a certain neon colored drink made by Pepsi-Co. It wasn’t just the original flavor that tickled my fancy, it was the orange flavored Livewire, the purple colored Pitch Black and red Code Red Mountain Dew flavors that I craved. I get the craving because on December 31, 2009, I gave up pop with the intention of not drinking it until 2020. In other words ten years. Many of you...

  • Counseling Corner for the week of January 6, 2016

    Jan 6, 2016

It’s New Year’s Resolution time, or more accurately, time for setting big life changing goals and then soon discovering you’re probably not going to reach them. Why? Because most of us tend to think too big. Stop smoking...lose weight...make it to the gym more often. While these are all good goals to aim for, achieving success can be difficult since that often means major life changes.
