  • My knight in shinning armor

    Jan 8, 2020

I refuse to think of myself as elderly, however a recent situation made me think otherwise. It was eight years ago I started thinking of retiring from teaching as I was getting more second-generation students in my classroom. How could that possibly be? I had spent several decades striking fear into the hearts of students in Washington D.C., Bozeman, Mont., St Louis, mo., and then finally here to Malta. Recently I was attempting to cross one of Malta’s many snow packed and icy streets to finish my Christmas shopping. Since I am now battling a...

  • Federal land grazers are losing their vested water rights

    Ron Stoneberg, Hinsdale, Mont|Jan 8, 2020

Ranchers running livestock on federally managed lands are facing a major taking of which few appear to be aware. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has filed thousands of water rights with the Montana Department of Natural Resources (DNRC). The problem is these filings conflict with the vested water rights of the allotment holders. Montana is a prior appropriation doctrine state which means, 'first in time, first in right' (miners' law). Most of the ranches using federal lands were established long before the BLM came into existence. Montana...

  • Feeling like 2009

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jan 8, 2020

On January 1, 2020, I had my first pop since December 31, 2009. Ten years! I made it and I know it’s not polite to pat yourself on the back, but it was a tough thing for me to do. For those who don’t know, Mountain Dew was a vice for me. There was a time that I would slam a two-liter of Dew in the span of a couple of hours. According to reference.com, a two-liter bottle of the aforementioned beverage has roughly 9.7 ounces of sugar in it and a grand total of 276 grams. One 20-ounce bottle of...

  • Loring News for January 8, 2020

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Jan 8, 2020

But as soon as I start taking pictures of them it seems they know and take flight! Cindy Clark stopped by to see my Christmas tree on Monday. We had a nice visit and as she was leaving, Janice Erfle was knocking at my door to come in and have a cup of tea. Patty Pollack and, Kylee visited Dixie Stordahl and brought her some jigsaw puzzles to put together! They must have heard that...
