  • Remembering November 22, 1963

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Nov 15, 2023

A moment in time, when history was made. Sixty years ago, on November 22, a landmark event in U.S history would etch in the mind of many. It was then that the world heard the news from Dallas, TX. The year was 1963, and it was on this day that President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated. Riding in the motorcade through the streets of Dallas, he was making stops and appearances in his campaign for re-election that his life ended. JFK died at 12:30 PM on November 22, 1963. With month Novemb...

  • Sunny, with a High of 50

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Nov 15, 2023

What a difference a year makes. By this time last November the ground was covered with snow. It didn’t bare off for more than five months. Today it’s sunny and 50 degrees with more of the same in the extended forecast. Sunny and warm is hard to complain about, but sunny and warm in Montana this time of year never bodes well. We live with the ever-looming specter of drought. Last year’s bountiful snowpack and spring rains hardly got us through July before it all dried up once again. The stock...

  • Bozeman was Fun But I am Glad to Be Home

    Pierre Bibbs, Play Ball|Nov 15, 2023

I had the honor of seeing the North Country Mavericks take third place at the 2023 State C Volleyball Tournament in Bozeman this past weekend. Last year, I missed the 2022 State Volleyball Tournament where the Mavs earned third place and made history as a co-op with their first state trophy in the sport. I thought I could have eye surgery and then drive to Bozeman a few days later. I was wrong. As most of us that have been around know, a state trophy in volleyball is unheard of in this part of...

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Nov 15, 2023

Congratulations to the North Country Mavericks on their third place at state volleyball! The November weather has been phenomenal! Temps are in the 50s and low 60s with low temps in the 30s! It’s been windy, of course, but not too terrible. The geese are still working their way south and some sharp tails have started coming into my yard at Loring. The town of Loring looks good, and you might wonder how I know that. I’m home for a few days right now! My sister Debbie drove up with me on Sat...

In early March 1920, Malta found out it would be on the new transcontinental highway that was being planned across the northern U.S. It started at Portland, Maine and crossed the extreme southern part of Ontario, north of Lake Erie. From Grand Forks, North Dakota westward the highway closely followed the Great Northern Railway. The highway was completed in a piecemeal fashion. In 1920, 29 miles in Toole County, 36 miles in Hill, 25 in Blaine and 40 miles in Roosevelt were to be graveled. Work being completed depended on the passage of road...

  • Memories for Wednesday, November 15, 2023

    Compiled by Kari Hould|Nov 15, 2023

1 yrs ago Nov. 13, 2013 When a freak October snowstorm in South Dakota left thousands of cattle dead in its wake, 16 local ranchers donated 29 head of cattle to help some ranchers there get a new start. Valued at $40,000, the cattle were inspected by Bill Anderson (who donated his time) and Jesse Blunt of the Livestock Association assisted with the project. A Montana tradition…neighbor helping neighbor. This time “she” was instrumental in “Coming home…” as Susan (Fauth) Bibbs and her sweetheart “Peezy” or aka Pierre (to the rest of us), ca...

For the second year in a row, the North Country Mavericks Volleyball team were able to bring home Class C's third place trophy from the All-Class Volleyball Tournament in Bozeman, doing much of the heavy lifting. Coach Charlene Wasson said that earning third place in volleyball is a little different than any other sport because earning third in the sport means you lost the match. "It is still amazing," Coach Wasson said. "We're third out of over 100 teams in Class C." The Mavericks faced all...

  • "Fright in Flight"

    Pastor Bob Unterseher|Nov 15, 2023

I made it past PSA security at Billings International Airport and headed to Gate C to wait for my flight to Wolf Point. The call to board the aircraft was delayed due to cold weather and the possibility of a snowstorm. Passengers were getting restless from the uncertainty of the flight. The flight was finally cleared for departure and five relieved passengers made their way to the gate. Twenty minutes into the flight, we flew into a blizzard and lost sight of light from small towns along our...
