  • Malta School Board recap

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Feb 15, 2017

The Malta School Board approved a change to the school district’s handbook which allowed three wrestlers who did not qualify for last week’s State Wrestling Tournament in Billings to travel on the team bus to attend the event. The school board, made up of five trustees, voted 3-2 in favor of the amendment to the student handbook after a 30-minute discussion between school administration, parents and the board. Those not in favor of the amendment were worried that changing the rules in the student handbook mid-semester rather than altering it...

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Feb 15, 2017

Over 32 years, Microsoft has released 22 versions of the Windows operating system and Malta's Kelly McCann has almost used them all. On Thursday, February 23, McCann will be teaching a class on Microsoft's latest OS – Windows 10 - and spots are still open. "Come on down," McCann said. "The last class I taught on Google was a lot of fun and I think most of the people who took it found it useful." McCann, the Technology Coordinator at Malta Schools and owner of "I am THE Geek" computer repair i... Full story

  • Legislative roundup:

Michael Siebert, Community News Service UM School of Journalism|Feb 15, 2017

A bill that would have abolished the death penalty in Montana was narrowly voted down in committee last week on a 9-10 vote. House Bill 366, sponsored by Rep. Adam Hertz, R-Missoula, would have replaced a death sentence with life imprisonment without possibility of parole. Hertz said the bill represented productive use of tax dollars, a pro-life philosophy from “conception until natural death,” and the notion of an offender’s redemption for their crimes. “I cannot in good conscience claim to be pro-life and support a system that takes innocen...

  • Schumacher Livestock Day creates educational opportunity

    Marko Manoukian, P.C. Extension Agent|Feb 15, 2017

Twenty-five livestock operators heard from an outstanding group of speakers for the annual Jim Schumacher Memorial Livestock Day on Monday, February 6. Dr. Rick Levesque spoke about the recent Tuberculosis (TB) outbreak in Canada where 10,000 head of cattle were depopulated in 2016. TB has many forms and people can get it from cattle and vice versa. During the 19th century, one out of every seven people in the world died of TB. Through this time frame in the US five-percent of the cattle were...

  • I'm not going anywhere

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Feb 15, 2017

My good friend Mike is an immigrant. He comes from Minnesota. I don’t hold it against him. I’m not from here either, although I’ve been here so long I’ve nearly forgotten where I came from. Mike, like most of the Minnesotans I know, fits in well in Montana, especially in winter. While the rest of us are complaining about the cold, Minnesotans embrace it. They skate, ski, snowmobile, and fish through the ice, all the while remaining cheery and upbeat. Mike stayed with us at our cabin on Fort Pe...

  • A letter of support for Keystone pipeline consideration

    Feb 15, 2017

The announcement that the Keystone XL pipeline’s presidential permit application is being considered again is good news for Phillips County, Montana and the United States. Trans Canada will become Phillips County’s largest taxpayer by building additional infrastructure in the county. Phillips County and the school district that the pipeline will be located in will benefit from approximately two million dollars annually in additional taxes split between the two entities. The State of Montana will receive a similar amount. Keep in mind that this...

  • Walls are not a new concept

    Feb 15, 2017

Twelve to fifteen billion dollars. That’s a lot of cash. That’s more money than many countries in the world are totally worth. And we have a guy that wants to spend that kind of money, your money and mine, on a wall. ( And it won’t be his money. Remember? He told us he doesn’t pay taxes.) (My Pop always said “ Be wary of the guy who’s spending the other fella’s money”). But where does that wall go? It sounds like a wall that’s a few feet wide, pretty tall, and pretty long. Goes across the bottom of three or four states. I’d say that’s a lot of...

  • Rep. Knudsen's Montana Legislature update

    Rep. Casey Knudsen, HD 33|Feb 15, 2017

It is week five for the Montana Legislature, and I apologize I have not written home earlier in the session. We have passed several good bills through the House, including providing inflationary funding for our public schools, electronic communication privacy, and a few bills that expand our 2nd amendment rights. I had the opportunity to be Chair of the Day yesterday, 2-6-17, which entails running the floor debate for bills up for 2nd reading. It was a great learning experience, and with 13 bills on the docket, there was a lot of learning to...

Get well wishes and our prayers to Baby Peyton KillEagle of Dodson. The Mavericks played Dodson two Saturdays ago and the proceeds from the 50-50 drawing, the cake raffle sale and the supper all went to the baby’s fund. Whitewater and the crowd were generous. If you wish to donate, send donations to Wes KillEagle in Dodson, Mont. Note: Iris KillEagle, Malta’s Postmaster, is Peyton’s grandmother. Challis Young (my granddaughter) helped me.
