The 1996 Malta High School graduate has teaching in his blood as his parents, Andrew and Barbara Otteson, are well known in Phillips County for their dedication to education (Andrew taught for 40 years in Malta where Barbara was also a para-educator.) Though it wasn't initially their son's ambition in life to follow in their footsteps, Joshua did eventually become a teacher and was recently named Teacher...

  • Dishonest outdoor columnist?

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Mar 1, 2017

In the more than 30 years I’ve been in the newspaper business I’ve encountered very few dishonest journalists. Only a couple come to mind and they were plagiarists who were quickly run off by their peers. The job typically pays so little and asks so much that there isn’t time to make stuff up. There’s seldom time for more than the facts. Because of my “real world” experience with journalism, President Trump’s attacks on the “dishonest” media have me befuddled. I wonder at what point in my caree...

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Mar 1, 2017

I will admit that reading has never been one of my favorite hobbies. Maybe it’s an occupational thing but after writing several stories a week, unless it’s sports related, or something that grabs my attention, reading is the last thing I want to do. I used to enjoy leisurely reading in my college years, which came as a shock to me but since my college years I haven’t picked up a book. It’s been almost eight years My son loves his books. He probably owns more books than I have had through...
