  • Vandalism at the Old Gym prompts changes

    Mar 2, 2016

Over the past three months, there have been three deliberate acts of vandalism at the Old Gym in Malta. In December, a new scoreboard controller, donated to the school by the Malta Athletic Club, came up missing. The cost of replacement for the controller was $1000. Sometime just after Winter Break, the lock on the boys' locker door was demolished, and just this past week a solid oak door and lock were destroyed as well as damage to a number of items in the "old wrestling room." For these...

  • Head Start Fundraiser

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Mar 2, 2016

The giggles of children playing during recess at Malta Head Start last week let's anyone within earshot know that the center not only promotes school readiness for the youngsters, it promotes having fun. Not a single piece of playground equipment went untouched by the children during the recess and the apparatus getting the most playtime was the wooden play structure which houses several different floors, a slide, a swing-rope and bouncy bridge. The structure is well used and nearly 20 years...

  • Murph's still got it

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Mar 2, 2016

Apparently Tom Murphy’s still got it. A wildlife photographer from Livingston, Murphy is retracing a solo ski trip he took across Yellowstone National Park in 1985. He’s even sleeping under the old blue tarp he used on his first crossing of the park This time, however, Murphy isn’t alone. When he embarked on the journey Feb. 20 from Flagg Ranch, just south of Yellowstone, he was accompanied by a film crew that will document the trek. Murphy, 64, and his crew of five hope to reach Mammoth Hot Spr...

  • Jerry's Barber Pole: A dwindling profession

    Virgil Vaupel, PCN Correspondent|Mar 2, 2016

When Darrell Brenna retired from the barber business Glasgow lost a good hair cutter. 60 years cutting hair with scissors and clippers with a shoulder massage tacked on for good measure. Strangers thought he looked like Kenny Rogers. As far as I know there are no "real" barbers left in Glasgow. I recall when Saco had two barber shops. The old-time shops with the red and white pole out front are rapidly disappearing across the Hi-Line being replaced by "styling salons" and "beauty shops." Some...

  • Montana's Bison Burden

    Michael Burns|Mar 2, 2016

Montana has a rising wave of conservationists from near and far choking the interests of our state’s historical and economical foundation. Squeezing slowly, our governor, the American Prairie Reserve and Bureau of Land Management have tightened their grip, choosing the health of bison population over the well-being of one our state’s most important contributors, our farmers and ranchers. The BLM’s recent prefatory approval given to the APR regarding grazing permits for bison is a scary foreshadowing of further decline of the use of priva...
