    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Mar 8, 2017

The anglers at the 11th Annual Take a Kid Fishing day at Nelson Reservoir might have been colder than last year, but they all seemed happier with how the fish were biting. “They are actually catching some fish today,” Malta Walleye’s Unlimited President John Demarais told the PCN. All told, Demarais estimated that a total of 70 students took to the ice for the event from Dodson, Malta Elementary and Middle School and the East Malta Colony, casting their lines from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., takin...

  • Headaches for Malta City Council concerning construction continue

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Mar 8, 2017

The new news on construction projects around the City of Malta was mostly bleak during last Tuesday night’s Council Meeting. The projects in question on the night included the water improvement project which tore the city street’s apart last summer and Superfund Cleanup at the old Airport south of town. “We have two projects that are backwards and upside down,” Malta Mayor Shyla Jones said at one point at the four-hour meeting. • A Solution to Winter woes

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Mar 8, 2017

I long for spring. So I’m buying into the concept of a meteorological spring. It started March 1. I was an easy convert. The spring I’ve always known won’t start for another three weeks. By now I’ve had my fill of shoveling snow, fighting bitter winds, and waking up in the dark. Open water, warm breezes and budding trees fill my dreams. I got a taste a couple of weeks ago on the Bighorn where I met an old friend for a little fishing. We camped out two nights and spent a day floating the river....

  • Bison problem won't go away until bison go away

    Mar 8, 2017

Dear Editor: I am hopeful the U.S. Bureau of Land Management will have a wide awakening with the forthcoming Secretary of the Interior Rep. Ryan Zinke. BLM will require new personnel who understand how to manage the public land resources but do they have any today at all? BLM effectively destroyed A.L. Hormay's restoration grazing allotments south of Malta that proved how range should be managed. Over the last 8 years BLM has drifted into an left environmental agenda supporting organizations like the American Prairie Foundation . BLM licensed t...

  • Support for the pipeline protesters

    Mar 8, 2017

Dear Editor, Sympathy to the protesters in South Dakota, who are protesting the pipeline going over their native American burial ground; worse yet, pipeline probably will contaminate their drinking water! (Personally if some company wanted to dig up my parents and families graves in the Malta Cemetery, I would protest too! Also, I know how important and precious water is, since I drilled my own new well here in Whitewater a few years ago. Hope they win the protest! Helen Austin, Whitewater...

  • Mail-in ballots save money, promote better turn-out says President of Montana Clerk and Recorder's Association

    Mar 8, 2017

Many letters and opinions have been written about running the upcoming May 25th Special Congressional Election by mail. I have been running elections for our county for going on 19 years now. When I first started, elections were much different than they are today. We had very few absentee voters. In fact I can remember when sending 300 absentee ballots was a huge number in our county. Now we send out 13,000. We no longer really run poll elections. They are more of hybrid between mailing absentees and poll locations, except that now the voters...
