  • City of Malta to Change how Cardboard is Collected

    Mark Foss, PCN Staff|Mar 16, 2022

After much discussion and talks with other cities around the state, the Malta City Council decided that a change is in order for the way that cardboard is to be handled at their last meeting on Tuesday, March 8. "Back when we started collecting and bailing the cardboard, you could make a small amount of money," said Mayor John Demarais. "Even if we broke even, it was ok. But now, there's just no way to come anywhere close to breaking even. So a change is definitely needed." "All of the other cit...

Polly Solberg and Dora Henry went to the Harlem Seed Show on Saturday. There was quite a bit of art and lots of beautiful quilts but not too many other booths and exhibits. Some said there was a good car show down on the end at the shop but we did not walk down there. There was a school for Election Judges at the courthouse on Thursday and it had a full class. It was conducted by Lynnel LaBrie and Lori Lundstrom. The weather keeps its up and down travel, we have been getting enough sun and wind...

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Mar 16, 2022

Wow, the clocks have sprung forward one hour so it is more like spring. I always have a tough time when the time changes, but only for two days. I heard more geese flying over today. It’s a welcome sound and sight, too! I was involved in a conversation about butterflies one day this week. Most people know that the monarch butterfly is one of the insect family that migrates to a warmer climate in the late fall. But we didn’t understand how that could happen because butterflies don’t have a long...

Sympathy to all refugees and victims of the war started by Russia. Pat Murdock called and said Richard Dunbar is at the Dunbar ranch. She said Dixie Moore (his sis) is his capable nurse. “Get Well” to Richard and all who are sick. Saturday, we (Jean and I) went to Sleeping Buffalo to swim. The pools were full, also there was a birthday party, how fun! Again, Congratulations to basketball teams, especially the NC Mavericks. I listened to many of the games on KMMR radio. That is a real ser...

  • Homesick during our vacation

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Mar 16, 2022

Radio cranked, the family truckster humming along at 110 while the high Nevada desert passes by in a blur, I was suddenly struck by a wave of homesickness. I sure miss Montana. Plastic grocery bags caught in the sagebrush, snapping in the wind next to the road, reminded me of home. A week in southern California had been more than enough. The food, always a prime motivator of our travel, was as good as it had been two years ago when we visited SoCal just before the pandemic hit. After five days...

  • Daylight savings time has started!

Mark Foss, Whats on Marks Mind|Mar 16, 2022

Well, thank heavens daylight savings time has started. I don’t know how we would survive without that. I always feel cheated with the spring forward. Going back an hour doesn’t seem to bother me as much. I will never complain about an extra hour of sleep. This is a good time of year if you’re a sports fan. It’s March Madness time for both the boys’ and girls’ college basketball teams. The national college wrestling tournament is coming up. The Masters is just around the corner, and all of the spring sports are starting at all age levels. Oh, an...
