When long-time Malta Walleyes Unlimited member and current Malta Mayor John Demarais entered the special monthly Walleye meeting at Stretch’s Pizza the second to last day of February, he thought it may be the last Malta Walleyes Unlimited meeting ever. “There was only about three people there and I was pretty scared,” Mayor Demarais said. “But as the night went on, we had about 25 members show up, we had some major discussions and we had some people step up. It snowed again but melted and is beautiful out (and then snowed again this weekend.) The geese are back. They are flying and honking. I love them. Again, happy birthday and happy anniversary to all March people celebrating this month. • Another centurion: Remembering Fern (Compton) Mangis

    Edward Mangis, PCN Correspondent|Mar 18, 2020

March 5th in 1920, 100 years ago, a baby girl was born in the Malta, Montana hospital. She came from strong stock. On New Year's Day, her parents decided that she should not be born in the homestead sod house as her brother, Duane, was. Her older brother, Ward, was born in the Homestead House her Great Grand Parents had built near Eyebrow, Saskatchewan, Canada. So, they packed up a seven-month pregnant Leafy onto the seat of a buckboard wagon, bundled in blankets and with rocks from the oven to...

  • Paid Political Endorsement

    Mar 18, 2020

Political bickering, name calling, and misinformation tactics are distasteful at best. One of the reasons I support Greg Gianforte is because he has risen above these distasteful tactics and continues to campaign on his conservative record, business experience and positive vision for Montana’s future. The negative campaigning will not help us elect a conservative Governor for Montana. Greg’s business experience and conservative leadership are desperately needed in Helena. Greg’s conservative leadership will help pass long overdue legis...

  • All's quiet on the Yellowstone

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Mar 18, 2020

Times certainly have changed. More than three dozen bison were killed by hunters recently just outside Yellowstone National Park. And it was no big deal. The national media wasn’t in attendance. Neither were members of the Buffalo Field Campaign. Protestors didn’t poke hunters with ski poles, as they had in the past, nor did they chain themselves to gates in an attempt to disrupt the hunt. There were no arrests. There were no cries of outrage. Maybe it was because the hunters were all Nat...

  • Loring News for January 1, 2020

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Mar 18, 2020

During this past week the ice in my yard pretty much all melted just in time for the new snow to lay on bare ground in piles! I think it must have dropped about 6-8 inches on Saturday! I took my watercolor paintings to the Harlem Seed Show this weekend. It was a good experience, many nice comments on my work. The other artists who were there were awesome! The whole show is very well run, but due to the coronavirus, state basketball tourneys and the weather, the number of visitors were down this...

  • MOI holds grand reopening in Malta

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Mar 18, 2020

Nearly 60 people filed into Malta Opportunities Inc. (MOI) last Wednesday afternoon to help celebrate the grand reopening of their building in Malta - which includes an update laundromat, new thrift store, and drop off area around back - and perhaps none were as excited as Selina Davis, a client who works at MOI. "I love it," Davis said of the new and improved building. "My grandmother, Anne Henderson, helped start MOI and this building was partly named after her...she would have loved it."...

  • Malta construction updates with David Veseth March 18, 2020

    Mar 18, 2020

One thing I watched last Monday was the placement of pipes by workers in the new National Guard Armory building being built in Malta. When I was inside the new armory building, I also watched workers do some welding work and install some new windows. Today I will be attending the open house at the grand re-opening of the MOI building in Malta across the street from Albertsons. This is where I also work, folding laundry. One thing that I noticed that is unusual for February and March is that it seems the snow has been going away quicker but it...

The Malta M-ettes basketball season ended with a victory, but unfortunately, the team and other teams that were still in the 2020 Class B tournament Consolation bracket, have no hardware. The tournament came to an end last Friday night amid the National crisis caused by the 2019 strain of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). • PCN revisits 1970 Panthers

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Mar 18, 2020

It’s been 50 years since the Saco Panthers took third place in the 1970 State C Boys Basketball Tournament. The PCN caught up with a couple of athletes from that team, starting forward Brian DePuydt, who was a junior at Saco High School and guard Will Eklund, a senior. The team was led by local legend Rocky Tollefson, who passed away in August of 2005 to cancer. “He was 6-6, he could handle the ball like a guard, and he could shoot from the outside real well,” DePuydt said. DePuydt said that...

  • MHSA ends Tourney

For the M-ettes and every team still alive in their respective state tournaments, the season came to an abrupt end last Friday night amid fears that the COVID-19 virus would spread to spectators, athletes, and coaches. For the first time in its history, the Montana High School Association canceled all state tournaments being held around the state. “The MHSA has received word from the Montana Department of Health and Human Services that there are now four confirmed cases of COVID-19,” a press release from the MHSA said. “As such, the Monta...

The dust was being knocked off of golf clubs, javelins, and various other pieces of track equipment, but now schools throughout Montana have no choice but to shelf equipment until mid-April at the earliest. The Montana High School Association's Executive Board held an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss how long the 2020 spring sports season should be put on hold as Montana and the Country as a whole tries to stop the spread...
