"There is not really a recreational program around here," said Laura Pankratz, member of Malta Trails, Inc. "So in the summer time we promote people getting out and running, biking, hiking. • Not a fan Cliches

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Apr 23, 2014

There are just some sayings I don’t quite understand. For instance “The pen is mightier than the sword. “ I get the meaning behind it. I know that communication is better than direct force or violence. But if you took the statement literally, it would be a no-brainer. If I were in a war in which I needed a weapon, my collection of Pilot G-2 pens would be the last weapons I would reach for. If you haven’t tried the G-2 yet, you haven’t lived. I have a few stashed away, including a pink one, just... Full story

  • "Phantom Smell" detected into downtown buildings

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Apr 23, 2014

At least some of the "phantom smells" that have pestered business owners in downtown Malta were sniffed out by John Demarais and the Public Works team last week with the assistance of smoke bombs. "We found four businesses that had leaks inside their buildings," said Demarais. "And then we found one vent on a building with a little hole, but we don't know if that had anything to do with it, but that is what we came up with." On Wednesday, Demarais and crew lit smoke bombs and dropped them down... Full story

  • I 169 supporter now playing money card?

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Apr 23, 2014

I guess it all comes down to dollars. Tom Gignoux wrote recently in the Great Falls Tribune that trapping “is a cruel recreation that drains money from Montana businesses ...” It was an interesting use of the “it’s-costing-us-jobs-and-dollars” argument that I hear most often used in reference to wilderness. Every time I write a column in praise of wild lands I receive letters from folks convinced that wilderness costs us jobs, drains our economy, and is simply part a federal plot to remove hu... Full story

  • Initiative 169 would take away "God given rights"

    Apr 23, 2014

Dear Editor, I am nearly 77 years old and if you sold everything I own I doubt I am worth $1000. When I was born I had the freedom and the right to trap, which I have done since I was 6 years old. Initiative 169 would ban trapping in Montana. To think that in my 77 years on earth we would deny the freedom and the rights to future generation to trap in the state of Montana is unthinkable. Two things must be done to stop this nonsense, do not sign I 169 and amend the state constitution that no one should be denied their God given rights. I have... Full story

  • A Column about nothing much

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Apr 23, 2014

Writing a weekly column is sort of like doing laundry. You know in the back of your mind that it needs to be done, but when it is time to really pull the trigger, isn’t it easier just to wear a T-shirt that is 20 years old and socks with holes in them? That, friends, is an awful analogy. And this is going to be an awful column. I have been wracking my brain all week trying to come up with a topic and in the end I got nothing. Zip and Zero. Nada and less. But I have to fill this space somehow because how many “tell them you saw it in the Phi... Full story

  • Disappointment with McKeon's wild bison decision

    Apr 23, 2014

Dear Editor, I was disappointed to hear that Judge McKeon had denied the plaintiff’s contention that quarantined Yellowstone Park bison transferred to the Indian Reservations should not be classified as “wild.” I obtained a copy of his decision in an attempt to understand his line of thinking. Unfortunately, it appeared to me that his 26 pages of legal maneuvering primarily dealt with rationalizing and justifying his predetermined decisions. While most of his opinions may have been on solid legal footing, others were a stretch of credi... Full story

  • Thank you, Mr. Degel, for opening the pipeline debate

    Apr 23, 2014

Dear Editor, Thank you Mr. John Degel for opening the Keystone XL debate: The TransCanada ads about the pipeline remind me of the Pegasus Gold scam that Phillips Co. endured. One day Pegasus thanked everyone for helping pass the legislation they had asked for in order to continue providing local jobs. That same day Pegasus announced they were closing their Zortman mine. The cleanup cost more than the bonds Pegasus had put up. Local jobs were created in the cleanup but Montana taxpayers got stuck with the bill. Just a neighborly Canadian... Full story

  • PCN story lacks some facts

    Apr 23, 2014

Dear Editor, In the April 9, 2014, PCN an article appeared on the front page about a popular website entitled Phillips County Montana – Memories. A few of the comments in the article have raised some questions and I would like to offer a few points of clarification. In the summer of 1992, Jeneanne Smith, Elmer Feigel’s daughter, was searching for someone to take ownership of his collection of negatives and prints, dating from 1964-1984, or it was going to be taken to the dump. Colleen Barnard contacted me on behalf of Jeneanne Smith as I was th... Full story

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Apr 23, 2014

A flurry of information was dispersed at the first Malta City Council meeting of April, including the new museum on Highway 2, City Pool upgrades and changes to departure times at the local Amtrak station. At the meeting, the new Antiques Modes of Transportation Museum – soon set to begin construction near Malta’s other museums on Highway 2 – was discussed. Schmoeckel said that she had met with Jane Ereaux and Kay Hould to talk about the new construction being built in the flood plain. “It’s just a matter of completing the paperwork and getti... Full story

On Friday, April 4, Turk Salsbery, a fifth grader from Malta elementary school, had the chance to do something that only three Malta grade school students in the last 22 years have done. Attend the state geography bee. This year's Montana State Geography Bee was held at the Petro Theater, on the campus of Montana State University Billings, in Billings Montana. "It was all expenses paid," Salsbery told the PCN. " We also got to stay at the Quality Inn. There was a pool and the pool was very... Full story
