  • Whiskey and robbery in Saco ... just playing

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Apr 29, 2020

With in-school learning shutdown across the state of Montana, so too were the Missoula Children's Theatre's remaining performances for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year, and some young thespians in Saco were disappointed by that fact so their grandmother came up with a fun alternative. "Bandit Joaquin & Ricochet" was a three-act, 20 minute play penned by Saco's Lexie Haynes which featured several of her grandchildren cast in a bank robbery story performed for family and friends while...

  • County schools to continue remote learning, Malta seeks three admins

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Apr 29, 2020

Montana Governor Steve Bullock announced plans to "Reopen Montana" last week during the COVID-19 virus outbreak which included schools, allowing them to open on May 7, but ultimately left the decision up to school boards who would need to implement a laundry-list of safety measures "that were nearly impossible," one source told the PCN. Under "school reopening considerations" Gov. Bullock's plan, schools were asked to consider a multitude of safety rules and guidelines including cleaning and...

  • Loring News for April 29, 2020

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Apr 29, 2020

International Dark-Sky Week was a success out at Loring, even though the skies were cloudy for all but three days. I watched several Youtube videos about light pollution and then I watched The Earth at Night on Netflix! And then on Saturday, it was world Penguin Day! Everyone knows how I like Penguins! I guess this last week was educational and broaden my horizons type of week because I also watched the Centrum round table of paleontologists sponsored by the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum! The...

  • Dodson News for April 29, 2020

    Eldora Henry, PCN Correspondent|Apr 29, 2020

Everything is still very quiet around Dodson as people are obeying the stay home edict. The weather has been warmer all week and is forecasted warmer for the next week and it is nice to see the lawns turning greener every day. Some gardens are starting to be planted and more flowers are showing through. We trimmed plum trees and there were a lot of buds so there should be blossoms soon. We see more birds every day and a lot of them are robins, and grackles (who are not quite so welcome). Get...

  • Thanks to the '66 Vo-Ag Robertson tribute

    Apr 29, 2020

Dear editor, My thanks to the fellows from the '66 Vo-Ag class for their tribute to Dean Robertson. I wouldn't have known of his death if they hadn't placed that memorial in the PCN. Mr. Robertson was a key person for us in our high school years. I think of him now as a Jimmy Stewart type; tall, friendly, wise and worthy of respect. As I recall he had given up the Vo-Ag/FFA role by the time I came along and was serving as High School Principal. If we wanted anything that required his approval we were provided with a note signed with a simple "D...

  • Here's to hoping you get caught

    Apr 29, 2020

Dear editor, It is a shame that some people like to take advantage of people while they are DOWN. With the fire at Garren’s house; there was Sheriff Scene Tape around the whole yard, No Trespassing Signs, someone or people felt they had the RIGHT to enter and remove items that we were trying to save. Some of the items was a large bag of DVD’s that were placed in the garage for cleaning, a lot of his musical equipment. I had not gotten to where his coins were, but assume they may be gone also. You know who you are, and I hope the game...

  • Going to try with a little help from dog

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Apr 29, 2020

I get by with a little help from my dog. Calling it “help” however, might be a bit of a reach. My wife calls it “controlling.” Jem’s always been an affectionate, loving dog. When our pup Ruth died of cancer last fall, Jem seemed to sense my grief. Or at least that’s what I thought when he insisted on climbing onto my lap at every opportunity. A lapdog since we got him nearly 14 years ago, it’s one of the few things he can still do. He walks with a painful gait, can’t jump into...

  • My first time cruising Malta

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Apr 29, 2020

I can, in fact, admit that I was wrong. Growing up, I learned to be pretty frugal with the use of gasoline, so years ago when my wife told me that cruising was a thing, I couldn’t relate and wondered what the point was. So naturally, when Susan asked me a few weeks ago if I wanted to go on the organized “Cruising Main” event, I snobbishly stuck my nose up. Though a lot of people throughout the state have been stuck at home during the stay at home order during the COVID-19 pandemic, I have...

  • Dodson's Mayor Cole reminds people of animal ordinance

    Teresa Cole, Dodson Mayor|Apr 29, 2020

The problem of dogs running loose in Dodson has gotten out of control. There have been incidents that have not ended well in recent weeks and all residents are by Town Ordinance required to keep their dogs in a secure cage or on a strong leash. The Dog Ordinance for Dodson also states that each residence can only have two dogs and they are to be licensed and have proof of rabies vaccine. The fine for violating this ordinance is $25.00 for the first offense and then escalating, depending on the severity. All dogs are to be licensed by July 1,...

  • Phillips County Museum News for April 29, 2020

    Lori Taylor, PC Museum Curator|Apr 29, 2020

Greetings everyone. With a hint of joy and a hint of worry, the Phillips County Museum is now open! It has been an odd experience to view so few people on the streets of Malta. It was quite unsettling at first. But I think the view I miss the most was at the post office. That sense of community was missing. It has always given me a comfortable feeling to see groups of one or two people standing and visiting while fetching the mail. Have you been to the post office this week and mailed a letter? Or perhaps you mailed your child! In 1914 many...

  • Malta construction updates with David Veseth April 29, 2020

    David Veseth, PCN Construction Reporter|Apr 29, 2020

I got to watch some work being done on some pipes across the street from the Sportsman Motel on Highway 2 and I believe the pipes were water pipes. In about a month or so, I estimate the Malta Municipal Pool will be filled with water as the work on the bathhouse there continues. The work there seems to be going well. In the summer, I might get the opportunity to visit the old Shopko building in Glasgow that I hear may become where that city’s Albertsons is thinking of relocating...

    Apr 29, 2020

With Montana airports struggling to keep up with costs after the COVID-19 pandemic brought air travel to a standstill, U.S. Senator Jon Tester successfully secured $20,000 to help the Malta Airport cover operational expenses, staffing, and certain development projects during the crisis. “Montanans rely on our small community airports to keep our state connected, and the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed down traffic almost entirely,” Tester said. “I’m glad to have helped secure this funding at a critical time—it’ll help the Malta Airport...

  • Werk to play football at RMC

Malta senior Franky Werk became the latest Mustang football player to sign a letter of intent to play football in college after agreeing to play for Rocky Mountain College (RMC) Battlin' Bears next season. Werk, is the son of Toby and Liz Werk of Hays, and in signing with RMC, he joins former mustang running back Allen Williamson, a 2015 graduate of Malta High School, who is a redshirt junior this spring. Prior to joining RMC, Werk was being looked at by a few colleges including Dickinson State...

  • Stiles talks basketball season

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Apr 29, 2020

Former M-ette Sophia Stiles started in all but one game (29-of-30) for the University of Montana Lady Griz this past year and the PCN caught up with the two-time Montana Gatorade player of the year, who has been home since mid-March when the COVID-19 virus caused college campuses to shut down across the country. The last sporting event Stiles had seen was in Butte as the Malta M-ettes faced the Forsyth Dogies in the opening round of the 2020 State B Tournament. Despite Malta's struggles that...

  • Gonzalez-Palou checks in

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Apr 29, 2020

Malta has been host to many foreign exchange students over the years, but 2020 has presented the world with a complex issue that ended the school year early. This week, the PCN caught up with Alba Gonzalez-Palou, Selva, Islas Baleares, Spain, to see things from her point of view. Gonzalez-Palou, who had participated in M-ette Basketball, was excited to participate in track and field but due to the COVID-19 virus, schools across the country shut down causing an end to both track and the foreign...
