  • Mary Lou Broadbrooks recalls 40 years as PC Nurse

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Feb 17, 2016

Most people, after 40-years on the job, start their retirement with a trip to a tropical island to sip fruity drinks out of coconut cups. Mary Lou Broadbrooks took a different route. The long-time Phillips County Nurse retired from her post last December and instead of sunshine-filled destination, she opted for surgery. "I had hand surgery," Broadbrooks said last Wednesday, "But I am going to Billings today to get the cast off and hopefully get the pin out." Broadbrooks knew she needed the...

  • County students treated to day of fishing by Malta Walleyes, FWP

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Feb 17, 2016

As the old saying goes, the worst day fishing beats the best day at work. The students ice fishing at Nelson Reservoir last Tuesday had no complaints about missing school and even if the fishing wasn’t great, the day was. “I’m having a good time,” Adam McClellan admitted. McClellan, a fifth grade student at Saco School, was sitting in a spear house during his interview and admitted that if he wasn’t out fishing, he’d be in band learning to play the clarinet. “I’d rather be fishing,” he said. Mal...

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Feb 17, 2016

A nearly two hour Malta City Council meeting last Tuesday included talks on what “economic development” in Phillips County looks like and a decision to tear down a barn that has stood in the county since World War II was reached. A packed council room at Malta City Hall – some in attendance left over from a housing study discussion hosted by the engineering firm KLJ -- were mostly awaiting the new business portion of the night’s agenda which boasted seven different items including the City of Malta contract with PhillCo Economic Growth Council...

  • Winter will return, but in the meantime...

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Feb 17, 2016

I get antsy this time of year. I’m tired of winter, ready for spring, bare ground and open water. Looking out the window while I write, I see blue sky and bright sun. It’s not hard to imagine it’s already another season. But it’s not. Despite appearances, it’s still winter, and will be for more than another month. However, that’s not to say there aren’t spring-like opportunities out there. Pick the right day and you can forget all about winter. A friend and I floated the Bighorn River in early F...

  • Play Ball: Pizza Party

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Feb 17, 2016

I was so distraught on Wednesday morning when I found out that last Tuesday was National Pizza Day. My love for pizza is pretty deep. Being from a town right next to the pizza capitol of the world, I’ve eaten many pies in my life. I’ve had many different topping combinations, crusts and flavor profiles, some awesome and some not so much. My favorite all time pizza consists of sausage, pepperoni and jalapeño peppers in traditional Chicago Style Deep Dish format; my venue of choice, Gior...

  • Counseling Corner for the week of February 17, 2016

    American Counseling Association|Feb 17, 2016

Not that long ago, retirement for almost everyone meant the end of that daily commute and free time to take up hobbies, travel or simply enjoying life at home. While many retirees are still doing such things, there has also been a considerable change in how and when people retire. Some of that is due to financial necessity. The age to collect Social Security benefits has risen and the private retirement savings of many were reduced by the recession of 2008, which also helped lower the value of many homes, most folks' biggest financial...

  • Memories for the Week of February 17, 2016

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Feb 17, 2016

1 years ago February 17, 1916 Local News Sissy Rhodes in his last attempt at an issue of his sheet, the Valley County News, says in his brainy Pat and Mike Column, that a newspaper in Malta will run anything from a whisky editorial to the republican platform, as long as he gets the dough for it. We are not aware of either of the Malta papers running any advertisements for the liquor interests, but from the looks of the patronage given the Valley County News, we think Rhodes would welcome...

  • Dodson, North Country face uphill battle in 3C

    Pierre Bibbsq, Sports|Feb 17, 2016

The North Country Mavericks fell to fourth in the 3C district after a loss to Lustre last Friday night in Hinsdale. With only three teams advancing to the divisional round in Wolf Point on Wednesday, February 24. Dodson seems like a long shot to make it into the divisional tournament, but stranger things have happened in Montana basketball. Currently with two wins under their belt, neither of which have been in conference, Dodson has a chance to shock the district. In order to advance the Mavericks and Coyotes, they will need to win at least...
