And when he reached The Promise Land He stood straight and tall, with his fiddle in his hand. His life was a mission for thirty seven years/ He faced his share of trials, shed his share of tears. While his d... Full story

  • Something fishy about out of state ads

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|May 7, 2014

An ongoing advertising campaign in Chicago bombards riders on the city’s commuter trains with images of Montana. Descending the stairs at the “L” station just outside Wrigley Field last month, I was surprised to see before me on the train information screen a video of two bull elk battling. Moments later as I was crossing the station, I looked down to see a giant map of Montana painted on the floor. I was walking across Lake McDonald. It’s all part of a Montana ad blitz started four years a... Full story

  • Questioning some of the leveling of roads

    May 7, 2014

Dear Editor, To the Phillips County Commissioners, I see the Road Department making an effort to level and flatten some of the curves on the roads that sloped. Then this results in a rapid acceleration on exit of the curve, gradually creating the washboard condition that gradually carves the whole curve. I fail to understand the benefit of the flattening of the curves. Also, I believe the road and b... Full story

  • May Day memories of favorite teacher

    Evelyn Hammer, For PCN|May 7, 2014

My older brother Orvin, who lives in my hometown in eastern Montana, just emailed me on May Day. Time to go to Mrs. Roush's house. In big brother fashion, he gently prompts me to write. Perhaps he knows this is a stressful time of year for a tired and slightly disillusioned 30-year, high school teacher. Perhaps he knows the importance of recalling the simple story of my one and only May Day basket. Perhaps he's prompting me to renew the innocence and belief in the love for one's teacher. Orvin... Full story
