  • Whitewater News & Opinion for Wednesday, May 11, 2022

    Helen Austin, PCN Correspondent|May 11, 2022

It’s May, hope you had a “Happy Mother’s Day.” Sympathy to the farmers and ranchers and all who are affected by the 2022 drought. Many ranchers have had to sell cattle since there is no grass and hay for winter. Recently I talked to a farmer from Loring, he said, “all the water holes in the area are dry.” The drought is so sad. We all need to pray for rain. Maybe some farmers would like to try different crops. The TV and radio advertise canola oil and you farmers get paid for trying it. Also, t...

  • Loring News for Wednesday, May 11, 2022

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|May 11, 2022

Another spring week with very strong winds and little rain. I have faith that the rain will come! I just hope it’s in time to make some grass grow and give the prairie a good drink! The migratory birds seem to be a bit slower to show up this year. Some are trickling through though so it’s always a treat to see them! A huge congratulations to the songsters from Whitewater school. They earned a 1 on the pieces that they did at state festival! I’m still in the Rehabilitation Hospital of Monta...

  • Everything changes, including me

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|May 11, 2022

I’m not a guy who dwells on the good old days. Everything changes. Including me. But really, it‘s hard to ignore. Does everything have to change for the worse? Bitter cold combined with drought eliminated almost all of my pond fishing hot spots in recent years. Restocking might bring them back, but not necessarily in time for me to ever fish there again. Fishing the Yellowstone River in the park – a rigorous hike in and out -- used to be a 40-fish-a-day type of place. Now I’m lucky to catch a...

Are you a COWBOY? Have you ever booted a big steer up from his sleep so you could spread your bedroll on the ground he’s warmed up? That’s what George Armstrong tells about the “cowboys” in 1900. In the saddle at daybreak after a 4 a.m. breakfast. Catch your horse and set the saddle on the hump in his back, walk him til he sweats and then climb aboard for the days work. Back for an early...
