  • Whitewater and Dodson honor Senior Graduates

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|May 18, 2016

Whitewater High School Graduation Friends and relatives flooded into the WHS gymnasium from all over the United States to celebrate with the graduating class of six. Of the six only two were born and raised in Whitewater, Tatum Moore and Layne Engel, but some of their relatives live in North Dakota and way over on the west side of Montana. Connie Wisher moved here from South Carolina; therefore, the southern accents were plentiful in the crowd. Jessica Anderson has roots here, but transferred...

  • The curious case of Old Glory

    Mark Hebert|May 18, 2016

For at least the past 57 years, an incorrect version of the American Flag has been displayed in the district courtroom in the Phillips County Courthouse. It was the keen-eye of VFW Buster DEO Post #4067 Chaplin and Judge Advocate Roy Waters who discovered the discrepancy a few months ago. "I just grabbed a hold of it and started counting the stars," Waters said of the discovery. "It hasn't been changed here since at least 1959...I was 14 at the time." Waters admitted that he doesn't generally...

  • Dodson's Terri Cole earns 'Cape & Tiara'

    Mark Hebert, Editor|May 18, 2016

The night before Dodson's Terri Cole was to participate in the 35th Annual Montana Women's Run in Billings, she attended the event's Kick-off dinner, both of which she has attended each year since 2006. It would be a short time later at the dinner – with a few of her family in attendance – which she would start weeping like a baby (something she said she does often.) "I started crying, because, you know, that's me," she said. "I can cry at a Kodak commercial on TV." The tears Cole shed at the...

  • The National Mammal

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|May 18, 2016

Reaction to the bison being named our national mammal has been underwhelming, to say the least. Especially around these parts. White folks up here don’t much care for the critters. Some would even go so far as to say President Obama’s recent designation is simply part of a larger agenda to remove man -- the true national mammal -- from the land. On the other hand, Native Americans in the area revere the bison and welcome its return. But then most of them are Democrats and probably even thi...

  • Knudsen will continue clean campaign, despite tasteless mailer

    Casey Knudsen|May 18, 2016

When I began my campaign for the Montana House of Representatives District 33 I planned on running a clean campaign, because if I have learned one thing growing up on the Hi-Line, it is that a man’s handshake is his word. My opponent and I agreed the very first time we met to be civil, to focus on the issues important to this district and not to found our campaigns on baseless attacks. My opponent, however, has recently sent out a mailer full of lies and deceit aimed at defaming me in the eye of the public. I am writing today to tell every r... Full story

  • Make them last forever-ish

    Mark Hebert, Editor|May 18, 2016

Hello boys and girls, ladies and gents, pets and relatives we own, but don’t enjoy. Gather around the campfire and let ol’ Uncle Mark tell you a story about preserving your memories. Remember back in the good old days of photography when cameras held film that was to be developed someday? Ah, can you hear the tray of slides circling around the projector, the hum of the machine and the pictures Great Aunt Helen took at that insurance seminar in 1969? Those were something, weren’t they? Even still, remember tak-ing that freshly popped Polar...

  • Issues with lighting

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports|May 18, 2016

When buying our house there were a lot of details I didn’t pay extremely close attention to. Over time I’ve come to find simple things have enhanced our experience living there. One of these details that I have found is that the lighting in our kitchen was really dim. I assumed it was simply because of the bulky light fixture but as the bulbs were nearly going out the other night, I knew I had to change it out for fear of trying to cook in the dark. I opened up the fixture, which required two...

You have never seen orange until you have seen an oriole fly into your trees! There is nothing like the orange with the black setting it off! I put my grape jelly feeders out right away! We received a fantastic amount of rain and snow on Monday and Tuesday. Some reports are over 5 inches, but we had nearly 2 inches right here in Loring! The sloughs, dams and ditches are full and the hills are green, green green! The District track meet was postponed from Wednesday to Saturday! It appears that...

  • Tallow Creek News for the week of May 18, 2016

    Zora Holt, PCN Correspondent|May 18, 2016

I went to Czech for three months. I left in January, and came home in April. My parents took me to Prague, the capital city. There were beautiful buildings with carved sculptures on them. We saw a gold man, a bronze man, and a silver man. We met Mommy on the Charles Bridge. Then, Daddy took us to the clock tower. Everyone had gathered in the town square. Suddenly, the clock began to chime. Two doors opened and the twelve apostles circled behind the open doors. Meanwhile, a skeleton rang a bell inside the clock and turned over an hourglass....

  • Memories for the Week of May 18, 2016

    Mark Hebert|May 18, 2016

1 years ago May 18, 1916 Slipped one over Last fall, Joe Brown purchased a number of trees for spring planting and hired a man to bury them in the ground until spring, when they would be taken up and set out to plant. A short time ago he secured the services of another man to do the work and fix up the ground around his home in this city and among other things he had a number of round holes dug for the trees. At the proper time, Joe marched like a major to the grave of the trees to have them...

In City of Malta happenings, two public ordinances were introduced to the council members, the first would limit the amount of time people could live in pull trailers and campers in city limits at two-weeks, the later setting a new fee for zoning permits. The Municipal code on parking on dwelling premises (Code 5.44.080 a change to a current ordinance) follows several complaints from city residents of people living in trailers.
