  • Benefit to aid Malta resident diagnosed with cancer

    Mark Hebert, Editor|May 21, 2014

If it weren't for rotten luck, Malta's Beth Casebolt might not have any. Not that she complains about it, but from one instance to another, it seems as if lately she takes one step forward and two steps back. Take for instance the house that her and her husband, Garry, recently purchased. Garry and Beth – who will celebrate their 22nd wedding anniversary in June -- bought the house knowing that it needed a lot of work, but were up for that challenge knowing that when the remodeling was done t... Full story

  • New owners look to return Sleeping Buffalo Hot Springs to former glory

When driving on Highway 2 near Saco, a huge, banana yellow slide shoots up from the prairie and re-minds people of what once was at the Sleeping Buffalo Hot Springs. For nearly 100-years, people have soaked in the springs, reaped the health benefits of the natural flowing mineral water and enjoyed family trips to the destination in order to beat the heat or warm the soul, depending on the season. Michelle Simpson is one of the people that remembers the Sleeping Buffalo Hot Springs in its glory d... Full story

  • Honey-do turns me to Batman

    Parker Heinlein|May 21, 2014

My wife and I own an old building we use an office. It’s a brick and block structure that was built in 1915 as the Malta telephone building. After the phone company moved on, it was used as a church and later a flower shop. When we bought the place there were inspirational phrases written on the walls inside, and two wooden signs, advertising flowers, were affixed to the outside of the building. We long ago repainted the inside and I’d been meaning to remove the signs on the outside for yea... Full story

  • Script may be my downfall

    Mark Hebert|May 21, 2014

No two snowflakes are alike, the old saying tells us, and I have no reason not to believe this as fact. My time working at newspaper has taught me that like those snowflakes, no two people have the same handwriting. Case in point, my wife’s handwriting versus mine. Charity writes in lovely, legible script. I, on the other hand, write in scratchy, unreadable blobs of inky confusion. It is the reason that she writes the well wishes on all the greeting cards we send to friends and family. It is the reason that I record every word of every i... Full story

  • No hunting on private lands has cost many

    May 21, 2014

Dear Editor, After reading Parker Heinlin’s “No Hunters Signs” article, I feel I need to let the residents and landowners know the ramifications of those actions. As owners of the Riverside Motel and RV, we personally lost about $12,000 last year and about half that the year before from hunters not showing up and cancelling due to lands being closed to hunting. And even though I am with the landowners about “no bison,” I can’t help feel a better way could have been found without hurting local business. No hunters staying at the Riverside M... Full story

  • Asking County Residents for a "no" vote

    May 21, 2014

Phillips County voter, I am writing this letter to ask you to consider voting AGAINST the resolution calling for an election on the question of conducting a local government review and establishing a study commission to do so. This comes up for election every 10 years. The county will also be voting on a commission for the same purpose. I would strongly urge you to talk to the county commissioners, and the mayor of your city and see what they say. I am sure they would agree with me. I personally believe this is a waste of tax payers dollars,... Full story

I like explosions and “The Walking Dead.” I love having dreams that I am one man against hordes of zombies. I love sports and I don’t care who knows. The only sister I had was a dog named Peggy. That being said I was unleashed on the Distinguished Young Women of Phillips County, per the request of my editor. The thought of Toddlers and Tiaras and Honey B... Full story
