  • Malta Mayor ready to drop hammer on speeders

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|May 22, 2019

Malta Mayor John Demarais took to social media ahead of last Tuesday’s Malta City Council meeting to address a complaint made by a citizen and seconded by many others; children in the street near Cedarview Apartments, and motorists speeding through up and down South 6th Street West. While Mayor Demarais said there isn’t a way the City of Malta can tell parents how to watch their children, he said that he talked with Phillips County Sheriff Jerry Lytle following Tuesday night’s meeting and the two agreed that the speed limit has been and will...

  • Spray weeds the right way

    May 22, 2019

Dear editor, We all would like to do our part to help prevent cancer, right? So here is a proposal for all of us: neighbors, school personnel, city crew. If you plan to spray poison on your weeds, how about protecting all of us humans (including yourselves), along with pets, bees and birds, by using this method: 1. Spray only in very early morning when there is NO WIND. 2. Notify all nearby people in ADVANCE of your plans. I once lost all the new apples on my tree, because of chemical drift. Years ago, a friend lost all of her tomato plants...

  • Someone's watching?

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors columnist|May 22, 2019

I like flying under the radar. Or I did. It’s hard to do so these days. My dogs can’t even go unnoticed any longer. I recently received a message via facebook that my “springer spaniel dog Ruth Heinlein” was celebrating a birthday. It was from the American Kennel Club, which keeps track of such things. Except Ruth isn’t registered with the AKC. She’s a spayed female and I didn’t see the point. Jem, my 12-year-old male springer is registered. Years ago I’d planned to breed him with another spring...

  • 10 years of pain

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|May 22, 2019

I’m a man. So the thought of anyone touching my feet makes me uneasy. I cringe at the thought of getting a pedicure or a foot massage. Even going to a podiatrist is a no-go. That being said, I should’ve gone to a foot specialist years ago to help with a situation that I have had for the past 10 years. When I met my wife Susan in September of 2009, it was as a food runner at the U.S. Open in Flushing, N.Y. That particular gig was extremely hard on my feet. This event featured more walking and...

  • Phillips County Museum News for May 22, 2019

    Lori Taylor, P.C. Museum Curator|May 22, 2019

Spring brings many joys and one that I appreciate is the chance to get outside and just wander. Keep your eyes to the ground and you never know what treasure or gruesome item you will find. In 1935 men fencing in the breaks of Frenchman Creek discovered bones protruding from the ground. An investigation into the bones found a human skull that had been laid in a shallow grave. It appeared the hole had been lined with thick bark to provide a type of coffin. A lid had been given to the coffin made from the same material. The soil had covered the g...
