  • William "Bill" John Murdock (February 19, 1937 - May 13, 2023)

    May 24, 2023

With a heavy heart and a tipped hat, we announce the passing of William “Bill” John Murdock, a true cowboy who rode off into the sunset one last time on May 13, 2023. Born in the rolling plains of Whitewater, Montana on February 19, 1937, Bill lived a life as vast and free as the landscapes he ranched. A man of grit and grace, his humor was infectious, his love was steadfast, and his spirit was untamed, as wild and free as his Scottish forbearers. Bill lived and breathed the cowboy way, from sunrise to sunset, under the hot sun and the col... Full story

  • Loring News for Wednesday, May 24, 2023

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|May 24, 2023

The days are getting longer! Just a part of the cycle around the sun! The goldfinches flew in during the week! I was thankful that I had picked up some sunflower seeds to fill the feeders! They are so brightly colored and their little voices are so cheerful! Also, the flycatchers are busy incubating their eggs! I haven’t checked the number of eggs, but I’m thinking five. The sweet peas are back in abundance also! Big patches of bright yellow all over the hillsides! The smoky skies have been both...

    Eldora Henry, PCN Correspondent|May 24, 2023

The weather has warmed up so well. It seemed that the trees looked almost dead one day and are now all leafed out and everything is so green. The tulips are drying up already and the iris’ and lilacs are coming out with color. It is wonderful that nature does its own little thing all the time. Dodson celebrated their graduation last week and the rest of the school has another week to go. The community laid three of their long-time residents to rest, with the funerals of Willard Mortenson, R...

  • The Most Depressing Season Has Started

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|May 24, 2023

In a state known for weather extremes, it’s the most dreary that I most dislike. While a week of sub-zero temperatures quickly grows old, and summer heat waves are hotter and last longer than ever before, both pale in comparison to the depressing downer of smoke season. Typically, we don’t have to deal with smoke in Montana until later in the summer when the forests dry and start to burn. It’s all preventable, we’re told, if only the forests were better maintained. One former president, in a st...

The opioid overdose crisis, for example, has heavily impacted veterans, increasing overdoses. While this Memorial Day, we take time to honor the memory of the men and women who lost their lives fighting in one of the nation's wars, we must continue to advocate for more support to help our veterans who are...
