If someone were to ask you to put your hair in a braid, cut it off, put it into an envelope and send it to Florida, would you do it? Seems silly right? How about it someone were to say that you were doing the above for a child, who because of cancer, suffered hair loss to do radiation treatment? Not so silly anymore, aye? • Sometimes I look like I know what I am doing

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jun 4, 2014

I’ve been fishing for nearly 60 years so you’d think I’d know what I’m doing. And at times I do. But if I’m not catching anything, my confidence quickly heads south. I get nervous and twitchy, convinced that I’m the only guy on the lake who’s getting skunked. I’ll switch plugs, move the boat, even pull out the binoculars to spy on other anglers. However, I will never, ever, ask for advice or admit that I’m fishless. It would be like admitting I’m lost. Just give me a little time. I’ll figure t... Full story

  • The Dog days of Summer are on the way

    Mark Hebert|Jun 4, 2014

The Romans referred to the dog days as diēs caniculārēs and associated the hot weather during the days with the star Sirius – the Dog Star – and believed it to be an evil time when the “sea boiled” and “burning fevers” ensued. The Old Farmer’s Almanac lists the period of the dog days as running from July 3 through August 11, also pointing to the Dog Star but adding that this is the time of year with the least amount of rainfall in the Northern Hemisphere. Before I became a “journali... Full story

One common question I always get is, “Where did you go to school?” The most common predetermined answer by readers is journalism school. In fact, there was nothing that made me more nervous than when my professors at Saint Louis Christian would say, we would have a 15 page dissertation or 30 page write up on a few scriptures. It was enoug... Full story
