    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jun 10, 2015

The 13th Annual Car Show sponsored by The First State Bank was a success with thousands in attendance at one point or another. It was a day filled with sunshine, a few breezes and even a few sprinkles of rain. Ninety-eight registered vehicles highlighted the event. "I think it's going really well," said Terry Skones, Vice President of FSB Malta and Treasurer of Phillips County Motorsports at the mid-point of the event. "We've got sunshine and a lot of people walking around." Bud Walsh of Malta... Full story

  • Tow-Mater Blasts off

    Jun 10, 2015

If you felt tremors last weekend, the good news is that it wasn't an earthquake. The bad news is that if you missed the cause of the noise, you missed Fire 4 Hire's show at the Hi-Line Drag Strip. Drivers Jaren Mott and Steve Cooke impressed with precision and control of two of the most powerful racing vehicles to grace the dragstrip. "It's a good time," Mott told the PCN. "The kids just absolutely love it. So that's what makes it fun to do." For those who have seen the Pixar movie Cars, they...

  • Belles Rock the Milk River Pavilion

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jun 10, 2015

To say Hell's Belles rocked the Milk River Pavilion late last Saturday night would be a strong understatement. The Seattle-based four-woman AC/DC tribute band nearly brought down the house with their sound being heard as far as the south end of Malta. But the band wasn't just noise by any means, no this group isn't your run of the mill cover band with a deep strong love and reverence for the Australian based rock legends they portrayed. They may have been better. "We do impersonate this band,...

  • Transparency is all the rage

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Jun 10, 2015

Apparently you can be too transparent. Montana’s Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks is catching a lot of heat for euthanizing a moose calf, and then blowing up its carcass, along with those of its deceased twin and mother. While the idea of disposing of the carcasses with explosives didn’t sit right with a lot of folks, killing the baby really set them off, especially after watching a video of the orphaned calf crying. Because of concerns about disease, FWP doesn’t take in orphaned moose...

  • Goodbye, nasty habit... hopefully forever

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jun 10, 2015

I had been a smoker for at least 30 years. I say "had" because as of a week ago today, I smoked my last butt. May was "Just Quit Month" and I guess the slogan should get some credit in me quitting, but most of the credit goes to nicotine patches. I have two of them on right now, one over each eye, and I can't find my cigarettes which makes them impossible to smoke. Just kidding -- but would probably help. I am wearing one of these patches on my arm and have been doing so for the past seven days (and by the time you read this it will be over...

  • Wool Pool delivery day: a 60+ year tradition

    Steve Edwards|Jun 10, 2015

Writer’s note: Back in March I wrote a story that described the way wool used to be sold and shipped along the Hi-line. In 2002 a new system was started that consolidated a large number of points where smaller producers shipped their wool to a new system of collecting wool. The people who organize the Hi-line wool pool sale each year invited me to come see how the system works. I drove to Malta, on a Saturday morning in early Ma,y to see firsthand how things work during wool delivery day. Here’s what I learned: About 30 members of the Hi-...
