  • GPDM's Woodruff to be featured on PBS

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Jun 17, 2020

As anyone in Phillips County knows, if you have a question about anything prehistoric-related, Great Plains Dinosaur Museum and Fieled Station's Director of Paleontology Cary Woodruff is your huckleberry. So it makes sense the Public Broadcast Service's Emily Graslie took to the the road and started filming for "Prehistoric Road Trip" - a three-part series where Graslie travels across the western United States examining our planet's history - she found Malta's Woodruff. "I am one of the experts...

  • Family Matters celebrates 20 years

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Jun 17, 2020

"We are so excited to announce our 20 year anniversary! Especially with the past six months that we have had, we couldn't wait to celebrate something positive!" said Avery Sorensen. Sorensen has been the manager for the store the past eight years, with each year presenting a new challenge. One consistent thing was that she could see the direction of online shopping headed in an upward trend and knew she had to jump in with both feet and hire an Assistant Manager to help manage the social media...

  • Loring News for June 17, 2020

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Jun 17, 2020

We had one day of summer this week. The temps were in the ’90s as were the wind speeds! No, I jest. The wind was only 70 mph! Plenty hot and sucking the moisture right out of the ground! Last week I told you about the flycatcher nest in the rafters over my deck. The nest was on the ground again this week after the strong winds all night. I'm not sure if she'll rebuild at this date or not. Thank you to the kind souls who helped move the dirt to the churchyard to landscape! You are definitely one...

  • My heroes have always been rodeo clowns

Patty Limerick, Writers on the Range|Jun 17, 2020

When historians see that their nation is in big trouble, facing the proliferation of protests that raise bedrock questions about American race relations, and locked in disputes over the proper pacing of “re-opening” after the regime of social distancing, it is time for people in my line of work to follow the example set by rodeo clowns and head straight into the epicenter of trouble. We are called to put ourselves at risk—thankfully only of scorned expertise and bruised egos. Once rodeo clown...

  • Ace in the hole

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jun 17, 2020

It’s finally Ace’s turn. At this time last year I still had four dogs. Two were old and retired from the hunt. One was a young up-and-comer, and then there was Ace, like Dwight Schrute, always a padawan never a Jedi. Ace hunted behind both Spot and Jem until they got old, but didn’t inherit the mantle of top dog when they quit. By then we had Baby Ruth and she quickly rose to the top of the heap. Ace didn’t seem to mind. Like all of us, he too, loved Baby Ruth. But she died last winter of canc...

  • Hopefully some normalcy

    Pierre Bibbs|Jun 17, 2020

I am glad to see that things are getting back to normal. With the potential threat that the COVID-19 virus presented, I understand why precautions were taken throughout the spring and through the early part of the summer, but it is good to see people being active again. I could only hope that the threat has been minimized. At the time that I wrote this, in Montana, there were 561 total cases of COVID-19 since it’s beginning and only 56 active cases, and seven hospitalizations. There were no a...

It is sad about police brutality and riots. Pray for peace everywhere. Get well to my sister Janet Brown. Also, happy late birthday to Janet and June birthdays and anniversaries. Sue and Allie Olson celebrated their anniversary recently. I asked Sue “did you get married in grade school?” she laughed and said no, but admitted they were married just out of high school. Also, happy 49th anniversary to Don and Diane Simonton of Whitewater. They had a nice party at the North 40 and many family and...

  • Phillips County Museum News for June 17, 2020

    Lori Taylor, PC Museum Curator|Jun 17, 2020

This week we have the story of Johnny Ritch another Phillips County character. Johnny rode into the town of Landusky in the glory days of the mining camp. During his first visit to Landusky, he lost his hat and cigarettes and came to several days later on a poker table, but he must have liked the town as he soon became a well-known citizen. Now Johnny had a bit of the reformer in him and had tolerable oratorical gifts. He was often called on to speak at funerals. The community of Landusky did take exception at a funeral for two local men who...

Typically in golf, if your average goes up, things aren't looking good for the golfer, but this year's Malta Golf Camp at Marian Hills Golf Course added 19 new campers, which was exciting for Camp Leader and Malta High School Golf Coach Kate Webb. "It's just good to see kids out here to confirm that golf is not a dying sport," Coach Webb said. "To see that there are kids still interested in golf and that we are able to foster a program."
