  • Brown in as new Public Works Director

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jul 2, 2014

James Brown was recently named Public Works Director for the City of Malta and with a few weeks under his belt while wearing the new hat, he seems to be right at home. That is probably due, in large part, to the fact that Brown has already worked for the works team for almost a quarter century before taking over the top spot. Brown has worked for the city of Malta for 23 and a half years. When he started with the Public Works Department he specialized in water and sewer projects, which still...

Department of Public Works Director James Brown told the City Council that mowing has been done on a handful of resident's properties because they haven't maintained their yards. He said that the property owners are charged for the service and that generally, following a bill or two, the...

  • "Lies, damned lies and statistics," pick the number which suits you best

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jul 2, 2014

In a recent tongue-in-cheek column about hunting opportunities in Montana I wrote that elk licenses didn’t get any cheaper after the wolves ate all the elk. Now I know the wolves didn’t eat all the elk. The northern Yellowstone elk herd only dropped by 15,000 or so animals following wolf reintroduction. And I’ve been told ad nauseam of all the factors -- drought, other predators, hunting -- that led to the precipitous drop in that herd’s population. But every time I mention wolves in an unflatte...

  • Forcing future generations to depend on foreign food is immoral

    Jul 2, 2014

Dear Editor, Just a few weeks ago, on May 21, 2014 without much fan fair, the President created a Monument in New Mexico with the use of the 1906 Antiquities Act. He designated 600,000 acres in Doña Ana County in need of protection. The area supports 10,000 cattle and 95 families. That is enough beef to feed 61,000 people annually. Maybe the administration did not know that there is a U.S. beef shortage. Maybe they did not realize that we are nearing $18 trillion in debt and that Social Security and Medicare part A are adding to the debt....

  • So, I am a soccer fan, but there is a catch

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jul 2, 2014

Well, it’s official, I am a soccer, er, football…whatever. The round ball game, played by the world’s masses, I am officially a fan…but with a catch. Last week I wondered if I indeed liked to watch soccer. After nearly 13-hours spent perched on my recliner in front of the idiot-box watching “the world’s most popular sport” this weekend, I knew that I was a soccer fan at the conclusion of the Costa Rica vs. Greece match. The match was excellent, a back and forth tilt in which the team from Costa Rica was forced to play with one less player o...
