  • City impound lot nearly complete, other updates at Council meeting

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Jul 3, 2018

The impound yard at the City Shop in Malta is nearly complete, so those who have junkers and clunkers sitting on public streets might soon find their vehicles with stickers warning them of impending impounding if not moved. "The impound yard is just about done," Malta Public Works Director Jim Truelove said. "We just have the one (impounded car) right now because I don't want to waste the space (storing it in the City Shop.)" Director Truelove's proclamation came at the Tuesday night Malta City...

  • First of seven farmer's markets held in Malta

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Jul 3, 2018

The first of six farmers markets this summer in Malta was held last Tuesday and though Little League Baseball helped swell the parking lots at Trafton Park, the turnout for the first event - both shoppers and vendors - exceeded event organizer's expectations. "This is great, the turnout seems better than I expected," Ann Sautter, Executive Director of the Malta Chamber of Commerce said at the outset of the event. The market got underway at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and ran until 8 p.m. It included...

Othello (Yao Dogbe), Iago (Joe Faifer), and Cassio (Jordan Gleaves) are confronted by Brabantio, Desdemona's father, during Shakespeare in the Park's 'Othello' last Thursday night in Malta. Thunderstorms and rain pushed the production indoors into the Malta High School Auditorium where a large crowd watched the play....

  • Paralyzed bikers stop at DQ

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Jul 3, 2018

A trip starting in Anacortes, Wash., and finishing in Bar Harbor, Maine, takes 51-hours by car, 1,003 on foot and on a bicycle, about 260 hours...but what about a handcycle...and what is a handcycle? People eating at the Dairy Queen in Malta had that question and many others for three gentlemen who stopped at the restaurant last Wednesday afternoon for lunch and to take a break from the highway during the trio's 3,257 mile trip from Washington state to Maine, handcycling to promote an...

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Jul 3, 2018

If you have been in the Phillips County News office of late, you will have noticed some changes in who is manning (or womaning) the front desks at the shop. Sophia Hebert, daughter of the paper's publisher and the one plucking the keyboard for this story, has been filling in as office manager at the shop as Debbie Solberg, who has been the PCN's office manager for 11 years, took over as the Advertising Manager at the beginning of June replacing Noah McCann who left for seminary school in...

  • Yesterday's Phillips County News Memories for June 27, 2016

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Jul 3, 2018

1 years ago July 11, 1918 The Phillips County Farm Bureau was taking steps toward asking the federal government for assistance for needy farmers. "Crop conditions have been such during the past two years, that unless a large number of our farmers can secure assistance this year they will be unable to continue farming operations another year." *** The streets of Malta were being graded and fixed "as good as possible to fix gumbo roads without paving or gravel." The expense of grading one block...

  • With conflicted emotions

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors columnist|Jul 3, 2018

I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for small animals. Especially rabbits. So it was with conflicted emotions that I dispatched six young bunnies last week. I didn’t want to be that guy, but couldn’t see any other option. Ruthie, my year-old springer spaniel, had shown up at the back door with a tiny cottontail in her mouth. I said “drop,” and she deposited the little rabbit at my feet. It appeared unharmed, but was covered with dirt. Ruth has a soft mouth, the result, not of training,...

  • Trying to stay hydrated

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jul 3, 2018

We will see how long this lasts. Believe it or not, when I lived in Florida, I tried my hand at jogging. I would huff and puff up and down the street for a two-mile outing while my band was not touring. I would jog to the gym, work out for an hour and a half and then jog back home. Fast forward to today and the only things that I want to do outside is smoke meat or take care of my lawn. Susan and I used to walk around town, but it did not last for me. The reason; mosquitoes. These mosquitoes in...

  • PC Museum News for July 3, 2018

    Lori Taylor, PC Museum Curator|Jul 3, 2018

Summer is here, and the flowers are thriving. The herb garden at the H.G. Robinson House yard is healthy and beautiful. Thinking of plants brings me to the discussion of Lewista Redivia or as most of us call it our State Flower the Bitterroot. The sight of the small pink flowers brings enjoyment, but much value can be found in the root of the plant. When the root is dug, boiled, then dried and ground into powder it has many medicinal uses. The powder can help to relieve pain, calm nerves, purify the skin, help to regulate blood sugar, and...

  • Whitewater News and Opinion for July 3, 2018

    Helen Austin, PCN Correspondent|Jul 3, 2018

Note to landowners and all cattle and animal owners: Keep your gates shut and fences repaired to avoid roadkill accidents. To all drivers: Watch for livestock, and more importantly, watch for pedestrians, especially at night when visibility is limited. (Sympathy to people who have had accidents lately.) We had thunder, lightning and a real downpour of rain. That’s wonderful and it makes fields, crops, grass and gardens all grow. Kathleen DePuydt of California was visiting Helen (her mother.) H...

The meet be...
