    Jul 6, 2016

A group of art students from Malta High School, under the tutelage of art teacher Anna LaBrie, recently finished painting the new "Freedom Mural" near the under-pass on Highway 191/South Central Ave in Malta. • Malta Council increases rates after 7 hour meeting

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jul 6, 2016

What started with a regular Malta City Council meeting and ended with the passing of three resolutions increasing of garbage, water and landfill users in Malta will now pay, lasted nearly seven hours and included public hearings, discussions and disagreements. The meeting was moved from the Malta City Hall Council Room to the building’s gym to accommodate the crowd of 32 city residents who showed up for the public hearings (also in attendance were the six council members, Malta Mayor Shyla Jones and several City of Malta employees.) The f...

  • Famous folks

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jul 6, 2016

Jeff Ament was in Malta last week for the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the skatepark he donated $100,000 toward building, making him the most recent "famous" person to visit Phillips County. The Pearl Jam bassist's visit to town got the staff at the PCN wondering who else of fame has been through the area over the years so we enlisted the help of some folks who probably know better than us how to answer that questions. Those people are: Barry McNamara – PCN managing editor from 1948 to 1...

  • Richard III invades Courthouse lawn

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jul 6, 2016

Montana Shakespeare in the Parks (MSIP) couldn't have picked a nicer time to perform Richard III, a play that MSIP just added for the 2016 season. The play was held last Thursday on the south lawn of the City's Courthouse with over a hundred viewers. Among the viewers was Kelsey Molloy who has read a few Shakespeare plays but was unfamiliar with Richard III. "I had to read them in high school and watch the plays then," Molloy said. "But I didn't learn to appre-ciate it until I came to their...

  • Dog day afternoon

    Evie McCorkle, Reporter|Jul 6, 2016

Raina Mortenson held an obedience class for dogs on Friday, July 1st in Trafton Park which included learning the rules of dog showmanship. I attended the course with my Siberian Husky puppy, Kaya. We started out the event by making our own showmanship lead by braiding paracord, we then began practicing simple commands with our dogs. We had our dogs walk at the same pace with us on our left side, while turning and stopping randomly. The hardest part of this course was definitely trying to get...

  • Ads in Yellowstone, 'Just do it!'

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Jul 6, 2016

Yellowstone Park has fallen on hard times. Apparently entrance fees from the thousands of tourists visiting the world’s oldest national park each day aren’t bringing in enough cash to pay for fixing the roads and hiring Mandarin-speaking rangers. But there’s an easy solution to Yellowstone’s money woes. Get all corporate up in there. Sell some advertising. Find free-market sponsors for all that nature stuff they got going on. Can you imagine the bidding war for advertising rights at Old Faithfu...

  • Former Malta City Pool manager takes issue with Malta City Council following hearings

    Jul 6, 2016

At the most recent Malta public hearing things became so unclear I finally just asked, “So your basically saying the landfill will close if we don’t accept these increases?” “Yes,” said Mayor Jones after a long pause. “So we just need to accept these increases and there’s pretty much nothing we can do about it?” No answer. I cannot help but remember the last time I attended a public hearing in 2007 as city pool manager. The public hearing that year was about residents’ properties causing blind spots at intersections. People who had to remove...

  • A tragic tale of a swollen ankle

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jul 6, 2016

It was early last Sunday morning, before anyone had arrived for the opening of the Malta Skatepark, that I dropped into one of the bowls. I shot across the concrete and up a wall, making a nice, long arching carve before pumping to the top and popping up, grabbing the front of my board with my left hand, kicking the bottom out with my right foot, for an epic backside 50/50. Something went sideways in my landing, however, and the board shot out from underneath me and into the irrigation canal. I landed with a thud, tweaking my right ankle,...

  • Hi, I'm Pierre...

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jul 6, 2016

And I’m an overeater. Shows like my 600 pound life and The Biggest Loser should inspire one to live a healthy lifestyle. It should inspire viewers at home to get up off the couch, put down the pizza and get active. For me it seems to do the opposite and it has been that way for years. I remember watching The Biggest Loser ten years ago and at the same time smashing a large oven pizza. This wasn’t a onetime thing. In fact it became a weekly ritual. There were times I rode a stationary bike whi...
