  • Dream comes true

    Mark Hebert|Jul 29, 2015

For as long as she can remember, Mary Nordland has dreamed of owning her own flower shop and as of Wednesday of last week, that dream has been realized and Tulips and Treasures Floral Shop is open for business. "I have done the flowers at Albertsons for years and years," Nordland said. "But I have always wanted my own shop." Since the beginning of June, Nordland has teamed with family and friends to get the old Packy's convenience store whipped into shape, cleaning, pulling down old insulation,... Full story

  • I will fill my freezer, one way or another

    Parker, Outdoor Columnist|Jul 29, 2015

It’s a good thing I hunt birds. My plans for an antelope hunt fell apart this week when I failed to draw a tag. I had earlier been notified that I hadn’t drawn a special elk permit, and my attempt to draw a permit for a bighorn ewe was also a bust. So I’ll hunt birds instead. That will please the dogs. Me, too. There are few things I enjoy more than hunting birds, but antelope hunting is right up there. It’s been a while since I drew a tag. Pronghorn numbers are still down in the areas I like to hunt. The 1,000 head of antelope that crossed the...

  • Time to uproot some perennial farming myths

Tim Buzby, President and Chief Executive Officer of Farmer Mac|Jul 29, 2015

As California descends further into its worst drought in recorded history, Golden Staters are looking for someone to blame. Many city-dwellers have pointed fingers at the State's farmers and ranchers. But they're blaming the victims. As Governor Jerry Brown put it, "[a]gricultural water users… have borne much of the brunt of the drought to date… with significantly reduced water allocations and thousands of farmworkers laid off." This misconception is only the latest in a long history of myths about American agriculture. It's time to plow und... Full story

  • As my mower gently sweeps

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jul 29, 2015

I think I live on one of the smallest lots of land in Phillips County. Looking at an overhead image of Malta, there are others about the same size as mine, but none smaller. When I first moved into my house near the elementary school, then new neighbor Trevor told me as much. He said that my family’s new tiny house was on just half of a lot while his was a full lot. I didn’t care – nor do I care – know, but I got to thinking about the size of my living arrangements last week when I went to mow my yard. You see, because I have no shed (yet) l...

  • Breaking the ice, with hot sauce…

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jul 29, 2015

Sometimes it’s hard to get the brain going, As I sit at my chair after the paper is all done there are some weeks that I struggle to come up with things to write about for the next week. I decided that I would go back to a trick I used over a year ago. I looked up an unknown holiday. This is what I found. Apparently today is the holiday of two of my favorite foods. It is National Chicken Wing Day and Lasagna Day. Chicken Wings have a dear place in my heart and my soul. It was just over three y... Full story

Cathy Bear has been in Dodson since 1996 and taken care of the fairgrounds since 2001. "Berta Anderson came to my house in May of 2001 and saw how nice and green my grass was. At graduation time she asked me if I would be interested in being the yard maintenance person at the fairgrounds? I said, Sure. So I took on little spots at a time that year, then the next year more spots. Then I started taking on more mowing, more painting, more of the whole thing of the fairgrounds. There used to be no...

  • Season warms up for Co-ed league

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jul 29, 2015

As the Malta Co-ed softball league closed out its second game of the year, the score of the game was noticeably smaller than that of the season opener, which was 15-9. Last week's game ended in a 7-6 thriller won by Team A. The defense in the game was better with multiple double plays, and stronger defense in both the infield and outfield. The game that should've gone only seven innings went eight. Team A would win a strongly contested 7-6 game against Team B, who was down by three in the... Full story
