In Sunday's AMX action at the Phillips County Fair, Chinook's Mike Powell ran a 1976 Pontiac Lemans. He fell in love with the sport after experiencing it for the first time. "I just so happened to be here and saw it eight years ago," said Mike Powell, owner of KnuckleBuster auto shop in Chinook. "So my son and I went home and built a couple." Though his son would typically race along side him, Powell said his son wasn't at the fair because he was building derby cars for Glasgow's derby races,... Full story

  • Stroh shows great promise in first year of Saddle Bronc riding

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 6, 2014

Like father, like son is an overused cliche. For example, both of Michael Jordan's sons played basketball in college but neither lived up to the hype as their father did. Many sports can be taught. Rodeo is in the blood. Hailing from Dickinson, ND, 17-year-old Boyd Stroh is the son of Shawn and Shannon Stroh. Shawn has been a part of the National Finals Rodeo for 26 years. Boyd took the Phillips County Fair by storm this year. In a stable full of horses with plenty of attitude, Stroh was the onl... Full story

  • The sweet site of a disappearing bobber

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Aug 6, 2014

There’s nothing sweeter than the sight of a red and white bobber disappearing underwater. It’s probably what got me hooked on fishing. That and bluegill, which while I can’t remember back that far, were surely the first fish I ever caught. I thought I’d given up bluegill when I moved West. I’d already given up bobber fishing after my father taught me how to use a fly rod and cast tiny foam spiders in the stripper pits of southern Indiana. It was a more efficient way to catch panfish than using a... Full story

  • Compiling Memories is my favorite pastime

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Aug 6, 2014

As the calendar flips to a new month I get to do one of my favorite things as the editor of the Phillips County News, i.e. looking through past volumes of this newspaper, one I was fortunate enough to inherent searching for old stories which peak my interest. I spend a solid eight hours scanning the pages of old newspapers for tidbits from the past that I find interesting …tidbits I hope you find interesting as well. Early on I found out the folks at Hi-line Retirement devote a time, once a week, to gathering to hear the Yesterday’s Phi... Full story

  • Summer of 99

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 6, 2014

This year’s fair was pretty legit. I enjoyed it even more so than I did last year, due to the fact that I had the opportunity to attend more events. This was the first time I have ever seen a tractor pull. I have to admit I’d never put a vehicle under that much punishment. I will never hop on a bull to face two tons of fun after I’m thrown off like a rag doll. You couldn’t pay me to attempt to break a horse. All those things were cool to watch though. From a distance. Thank the Lord for that st... Full story
