  • Roots & Boots rocks the 103rd

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Aug 8, 2018

The Grandstands and infield at the fairgrounds in Dodson were packed on Friday night at the 103rd Phillips County Fair as Country Music heavyweights Aaron Tippin, Sammy Kershaw and Colin Raye - known collectively as Roots & Boots - jammed for the better part of 90-minutes. "Are we having fun tonight Montana?" Kershaw asked the 1,698 concert goers in attendance. Audible shouts of "yeah," whistles, and then drinks and small American flags raised in the air were the answers to his query. The 1,698...

The Senior Advanced Beef Showmanship was won by Malta's Kailey Crowder who was crowned the event's Grand Champion and Reserve Champion in Market Beef. Mark Hebert, Publisher|Aug 8, 2018

Though the total entries at this year's Phillips County Fair Open Class are down a bit from last year, the contest continues to ride a resurgence which started at 2015's 100th fair in Dodson and continues to delight fair-goers. "Even though we are down this year, we are tickled pink by the number of entries this year," Phillips County Fair Board's Joy Linn said. "People thought the entries in Open Class would die off after the 100th anniversary but they haven't, so we are really excited about...

  • Dealing with urban deer

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors columnist|Aug 8, 2018

It often happens that when you solve one problem you create another. Cities and towns all across Montana are struggling to deal with a growing urban deer population. The issue was brought up last week at a city council meeting in Malta when a resident complained deer had moved into her mother’s carport, and were eating the flowers in her yard. “Something needs to be done,” mayor John Demarais said. “I just don’t know what.” People in town have even begun shooting the deer with paintball g...

  • I have tasted greatness

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 8, 2018

It finally happened. Recently I wrote a three-part series of how I missed out on Taco Bell's Nacho Fries. I can finally say that I had a chance to taste the greatness that was those nacho fries. It wasn't without controversy, but I did it! On a trip to Chicago a couple of weeks ago to say goodbye to my grandfather, we had pulled into a hotel in Dickinson to rest from a day full of driving, when it hit me that there was a Taco Bell right across the street from us and at midnight I was going to...

  • Winter blues in August

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Aug 8, 2018

Another Phillips County Fair has come and gone and what comes next, though exciting in their own rights, sort of depress me. The end of this year’s fair marks the beginning of fall and then winter, and with each year that passes, I wonder how many more I can go through. Living in Montana for the past 22 years has toughened me up, given me thicker skin to deal with the elements (huge portions of Montana biscuits and gravy over the past two decades have also helped with insulation of the bod.) I moved back to my birth town of Missoula from San D...
