  • Youth Dynamics Celebrates 40 Years of Service to Montana Youth

    Mark Foss, PCN Staff|Sep 1, 2021

It seems these days that more and more people are becoming aware of mental health issues and are not scared to come out and say, "Hey, I need help." Seeing superstar tennis player Naomi Osaka push for more mental health awareness and having the most decorated Olympian of all time with 28 medals, Michael Phelps, admit that he has problems and that, "It's ok to not be ok," has opened a lot of discussion on that subject. We, as a community, are lucky to have a resource right here in Malta,...

  • The 2021 Drought has impacted Gamebird Hunting

Marc Kloker, MT FWP Region 6|Sep 1, 2021

Biologists for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks are expecting that many areas of the region will be challenging for upland bird hunting this fall. However, some areas with good habitat conditions should have fair bird populations for hunters prepared to find them. Habitat conditions, spring adult populations, and recent brood observations vary widely across the region for all species. Most noticeably, the severe drought has negatively impacted vegetation throughout the season and has likely led to a decrease in nest and brood success of all...

The moon is waning and soon it will be a new moon, really dark, but great star gazing time! The rains were spotty this week. Every drop is welcomed! The grass greened up a little, and the dust was washed off the trees! The goldfinches have really moved into my sunflowers! They are quite the acrobats, standing upside down to get the seed! I had a hummingbird come into my feeder this week! I was lucky to see it! Cecile Norville spent the week with Nana and Papa Lumsden. Pete Lumsden and Jay Blunt...

  • Last cruise on the pontoon this year

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Sep 1, 2021

I always get a feeling of melancholy this time of year. When I was young it was brought on by the realization that school was about to start again, that the endless days of summer were not so endless after all. Now it’s brought on by those necessary seasonal chores summer’s passing requires, one in particular. We pulled the pontoon boat out of the water last week. We’re not done fishing yet, but we have another boat for that and it’s kept in the garage when we’re not there. The pontoon...

  • My day with Lincoln; PJ is a second grader!

    Pierre Bibbs|Sep 1, 2021

Last Wednesday was the first day of school for my oldest son and new second-grader, PJ. I also had the privilege of staying at home with my youngest son Lincoln, a three-year-old. Lincoln is an inquisitive young lad, who asks over 200 questions a day. Though I used to joke about a talkative person trying to talk underwater, I almost fell over when Linc told us about a scare that he had on a water slide. He said, “I tried to talk underwater.” Thankfully, mom was there to pick him up out of th...

  • Phillips County Museum News for Wednesday, September 1, 2021

    Lori Taylor, P. C. Museum Curator|Sep 1, 2021

As Covid raises its ugly head in Phillips County a dear friend comes to mind. She and her mother both passed due to Covid. In remembering, a story came to mind about the grandmother of my friend. Grandmother was quite a lady. She came from Minnesota to Montana with her family in the early 1900s. The early years were hard with the family living in tents during the summer when their house burned down. In rebuilding the family pulled up fence posts, stood them end to end, and made their home. By the year 1919, she proved up on a homestead claim...
