  • Another swig of pickle juice

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Sep 7, 2016

I make it a point to hike into the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone at least once every summer. It’s a place I first visited 45 years ago. The fishing isn’t what it used to be and neither is the canyon following the fires of 1988, but it remains one of my favorite spots on the planet. I’m sure part of the attraction of the canyon for me is how inaccessible it is. However, it’s not the hike in that’s the problem. It’s the climb out. When I was younger a friend and I would race back to the trailhe...

  • What Happened HLRC?

    Riley Abrahamson|Sep 7, 2016

Dear Editor, I didn’t want to believe it was true when I first heard that Hi-Line Retirement Center would no longer be a nursing home, but rather just an Assisted Living facility. I want to know what happened to our nursing home? After reading some of the news articles recently published about the Nursing Home, I understand it to be more financial issues, but I ask how is this possible? Don’t you think at the very first sign of any negative financial problems, that it should have raised some red flags immediately. Now here I see you are closing...

  • That's my boy!

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Sep 7, 2016

It’s interesting seeing my little boy grow up. He has always seemed to have an interest in sports. He continued to show an interest in football as the season kicked off last Friday. He was into the game, the music and the only red flag I saw was that he was dancing with the cheerleaders. But he had a great time. It’s crazy to see how he remembers certain things from last season. He remembered that after the game kids are allowed to run all over the field. As soon as the game ended he had the...

  • The Insatiable Thirst for Access

    Terry L. Anderson|Sep 7, 2016

The Insatiable Thirst for Access By Terry L. Anderson When the Montana Supreme Court issued its decision regarding access for floating the Dearborn and Beaverhead Rivers in 1984, no one could have imagined the battles that would ensue over the next 30 years. Not only did the court ruling open most Montana’s rivers and streams to recreation “without regard to streambed ownership or navigability,” it laid the foundation for invoking the “public trust doctrine” in a myriad of resource policy debates. That doctrine was invoked in the 1984 Supr...

  • President Obama is Wasting America's Energy Windfall

    Dan Kish|Sep 7, 2016

Oil imports could soon be a thing of the past. That's the main takeaway from a new report from Nordic consulting firm Rystad. Researchers estimated the total recoverable oil reserves still buried under American soil. The final figure is astonishing: 264 billion barrels -- more than any other nation in the world. Unlocking these reserves would generate tremendous benefits for the economy and move America towards full energy independence. Yet the White House has repeatedly stood in the way. Time and again, this administration has tried to...

Daughter Darcy and family were down to help and enjoy the break and the company. Wink and Terri Cole were in Helena for the weekend visiting family and watching their granddaughter play soccer. Everyone enjoyed the Indian Taco’s ser...

  • First State downs Independence in 'battle of the banks' at Marian Hills

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Sep 7, 2016

Those in the know didn't hold out much faith that the First State Bank golf team had much of a chance against the Independence Bank team at the Malta Men's League Golf Championship last Thursday at Marian Hills. The Independence Bank squad won last year's championship (they also took the title in 2009) and First State Bank hadn't claimed the title since 2008. On paper, it didn't look good. On the course, however, it ain't over 'til it's over. First State Bank's A and B golfers – Bob Galt and J...

  • Mustangs boast five seniors this season

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Sep 7, 2016

The Malta Mustangs are a pretty young team this season after losing 12 seniors to graduation. This season the Mustangs will only have six seniors, opening up spots for underclassmen that may start for years to come. The Mustangs dropped their opening game to the 2015 State B runner-up Huntley Project last Friday 21-14. The team displayed a more than capable offense that will only get better with more experience and a defense that showed plenty of backbone as they only allowed two third down...

The team bounced back the next day as they took down Class B's Harlem with sets of 25-17, 25-11 and 25-11. Like last year the team won't have a big senior class as the only returning senior is hitter Kaleigh Cummings. The team will be under Coach...

The Dodson-Whitewater Harriers have about an hour drive between their two communities, but the runners are supportive when it counts. They were like that last year too." Coach Bloomer coaches the Dodson side of the Co-op, while Coach Bruce Warren coaches the Whitewater side. This season, Dodson will field four of...

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Sep 7, 2016

The Malta M-ettes Volleyball team flashed some potential early this season as they defeated CJI 30-24, Geraldine-Highwood 30-10 and Cut Bank 30-27 during pool play at the Chinook Volleyball Invitational last Friday. The team eventually lost out in Saturday's tournament but the team should experience a bit of growth with four new starters this season as well as a brand new head coaching duo consisting of coaches Tasha Hines and Kalli Reintjes. The team lost several seniors to graduation including...
