  • Saco Fun Days

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Sep 9, 2015

Dreary Labor Day weather in the region might have moved some Saco Fun Days events inside, but it didn’t slow people from showing up in town for the three-day event. “It was a great turnout and everyone had an awesome time,” said Nena Malmend, President of the Saco Chamber of Commerce. “The night activities were down in attendance a little bit because of the weather, but both of the feeds had great turnouts.” Bookended by the feeds, kid’s fishing derby, class reunions and pie socials, th...

  • Slow down...what's the hurry?

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Sep 9, 2015

Though International Walk to School Day is still a month away, there are plenty of children in the towns of Phillips County who are afoot or aboard bicycles as the area’s youngsters are all back in school for the 2015-16 year. It has been brought to the Phillips County News’ attention that residents are witnessing others driving aggressively around towns – both during school hours and otherwise – so this story aims to re-educate drivers, pedestrians and bicycle riders alike with the street laws in our towns. Phillips County Sheriff Scott M...

  • Christofferson finishes USMC boot camp

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Sep 9, 2015

Since his days in kindergarten, Malta’s Kameron Christofferson knew he wanted to serve his country as a member of the armed forces. Back then, his thought was to join the United States Army and when he reached high school, he enlisted and realized his lifelong dream. It was about two and half years into his service in the Army that Christofferson decided that he wanted to “kick it up a notch.” “I was originally going to take the Special Forces route,” said Christofferson, “but then I decided I w...

  • Smoky skies might be our future

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Sep 9, 2015

How quickly we forget. The smoke last week was as bad as I can remember. For days it lay on the land like a thick, foul fog. The only escape was to stay inside, run the air conditioner, and keep the windows closed. Then a cold front blew through the state, bringing showers, and in their wake, clear skies. We all breathed a sigh of relief, commented how wonderful it was that the smoke was gone and resumed life as normal. Not that we have any choice. Forest fires are no easier to put out now than...

Aspirations; through dreaming of Innovation: A story of my time in Bozeman. My life in Bozeman so far has been two things, brief and incredibly reinvigorating. I’m dreaming like I used to way back in third grade reading Harry Potter books after school! I’ve made hundreds of stories and thousands of memories in the past 10-days. I’ve met so many incredible people! I cannot wait to be home around Christmas to share some of my life with my dear friends Mason, Matthew, the Love family, Mom and Dad, the Siblings, and all of you in general Malta...

  • Don't shoot, spray tobacco plug tea instead

    Sep 9, 2015

To Enid Fewer: Yes, I too have a garden, flowers , fruit trees, and bushes. I too use items to ward off deer and also try to plant deer resistant vegetation. Best deer retardant - tobacco plug tea sprayed on the foliage - works great - from the way it smells must taste as bad. Also bugs don't like it either. Plants seem to like it though - acts like an organic fertilizer or maybe "things that like to grow in the dirt " are secret smokers. Perhaps you might try it - want the recipe - I'm in the phone book - and then you won't have to shoot a...

  • Disappointed with recent Tribune article

    Sep 9, 2015

Dear Editor, I was disappointed in the Aug. 14, 2015 Great Falls Tribune article, “Restoring buffalo is an act of healing” by the National Wildlife Federation. The article claims that “[Original Americans’] lives centered on a close relationship with buffalo for thousands of years.” And yet, it proposes “restoring buffalo in and around the million-acre Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge.” I firmly believe that buffalo and Original Americans were part of a vital dual species keystone species complex. Neither species could operate in its...

  • Hoping APR is committed to being a good neighbor

    Sep 9, 2015

Dear Editor, The recent articles by James Walling and Mark Herbert in the Phillips County News and Glasgow Courier raise important questions about how our way of life and our heritage will be impacted by the American Prairie Reserve's (APR) desire to turn Montana's Hi Line into North America's largest Serengeti. Prior to these articles, discussions with APR have been largely one-sided and questions and concerns from the local community have been brushed aside. Will the APR's work to save "free roaming bison" from extinction eradicate a sizable...

  • Slow down and watch for children

    Sep 9, 2015

Dear Editor, Today I watched at least five cars pass through an intersection on Central Ave. As a young grade schooler waited at the crosswalk for someone to stop. The kid apparently lost his patience (which I don't blame him) made a run for it, and damn near got hit by a car! The driver of the car laid on the horn (like it was the kid's fault) and sped off. Needless to say, I followed the driver and had a few choice words with the individual. C'mon people, is your rush to get somewhere really worth a child's life? The school year has started...

Our sympathy to the fire victims and firefighters in various places around Montana and Canada. For several days, the smoke was thick all the way up here in Whitewater. • 'Tis the Season

    Kari Hould, PCN Correspondent|Sep 9, 2015

'Tis the season ... A year of planning, preparations, waiting and anticipation draws closer to an end as the farmer begins harvest. For some it's a break away from working in town or ranching, while to those whose life is solely dedicated to the production of grain crops, it is their entire life. Phillips County is an agricultural based county and businesses and individuals all know and feel the impact as well as importance of a strong agricultural community. The saying that a dollar goes...
